benchmade vs cold steel?

Benchmade makes a higher end product. Cold steel makes decent knives for the money in the voyager series.

IMHO, Benchmade is overpriced. Dollar to Dollar, Cold steel has better stuff for a lot less money.

IMO cold steel is similarly overpriced. For the country of origin, fit and finish, and materials, they should be much cheaper. A $50 Spyderco or Kershaw offers much more in each of those categories than a Cold Steel of the same price, for example.

rarely do they overlap in niches-all I can think of are combat/survival knives like the CSK/SRK and heavy duty folders are areas you can compare them in.

I don't like either company as a whole , but they both manage to put out some knives that I admire enough to buy from time to time.

I tend to lump Cold Steel, CRKT, and Gerber all in the same boat. Next is Kershaw (huge selection, some better/some worse). Then Spyderco/Benchmade.

Benchmade is garbage. Do they make anything as cool as this? How are you going to defend yourself when the terrorists attack you with a sword? Certainly not with a Benchmade.

I prefer benchmade over cold steel but I do have to question why every single benchmade folder I've owned requires me to loctite the pivot screw because it comes horribly loose after 3-20 opening/closings. I had a 940 that would develop blade rattle after 3 opening/closing cycles and my best bm yet was a mini ritter that would come loose after 20 openings. I dont flick my knives either. I dont mind tightening a pivot on a regular basis because I hate loctite but BMs are ridiculous. My CS Voyager hasnt needed pivot screw adjusting since I got it 2 months ago.

The sad thing about these threads is that it does not take long for them to degenerate into a display of loutish and rude behavior. A lot of people love Cold Steel , a lot of people love Benchmade and so on and so forth.
This is a forum for the discussion of knives , whether they are meant to be used for buttering toast or 'de-animating your enemy'. Anyone should be able to come on here and respectfully enjoy speaking about what they enjoy without some braggart bashing what someone may define as a good knife.

That said , I have bought a fair equal number of knives from both companies and not once mind you , did I get one that was in sad shape- new out of the box- from one of these companies. I'll give you a guess , it was not Cold Steel. ( especially sad considering two of these knives were darn near the $200 mark...)

I have owned a couple Cold-Steels and a few Benchmades. The child in me likes CS, but the practical EDC adult likes Benchmade. My Mini Grip is a far better knife than any CS I have owned. But my 1st gen AK-47 will always have a place in my heart though. They both make some solid knives. Oddly enough, I am not a huge fan of the Tri-Ad, but it's a lockback thing not just the Tri-Ad.

"You get what you pay for." Is a decent rule of thumb, as long as your not talking about Ford Chevy or Dodge.

Couple years ago Coldsteel was a bit of a joke unless you wanted an inexpensive (generally), and decent quality (generally) tool for killing a person. Then the Tri-ad lock came around and they've been reborn to a degree. Now they make extreme use folders with what is often considered the best lock in the world.
Benchmade has been making some of the best folders around for a long time. The Axis lock is very strong, smooth, and more user friendly than the Tri-ad. Benchmade uses far better steels and has a much wider range of designs. They also have a better warranty by a long shot.

If you are on a budget and need a knife to beat on and don't mind knives made outside of the US, Coldsteel may be a good choice if you find a design you like. They also offer monster folders, spears, and plenty of other odd items that other companies don't have competition for.
If you want a fine quality knife, made with high-end materials, US made with an incredible warranty, Benchmade is the way to go if you can afford to spend a bit more.

Buy CS, you can dig a hole in the wall, a tree, or whatever you like without spending much, and therefore not worrying too much about damage to your knife. With a Benchmade, you can take pride in your high quality knife and use it for years. Many Benchmades can take heavy use too by the way too, but not likely to the point of the current CS folders. But, the BM warranty offsets that.

Benchmade trumps Cold Steel.
Materials and fit and finish alone.
Not to mention the solid reputation that Benchmade has maintained for decades.
However, Cold Steel supplies us with great beaters.

I would say it is more like comparing a Lexus with a Ford truck. A benchmade is great sometimes and a good old sturdy no frills Cold steel folder is better in other circumstances. I have both. I think a comparison between Spyderco and Benchmade might make more sense.

I'd say their budget stuff is about equal in quality, and their budget stuff is all I can afford...

this economy is pretty bad, so if I see a folding knife for around $50-$80 and with the strongest lock (tri ad lock), I'm gonna jump on that deal, I don't have boat loads of cash to dump on expensive knives,I need a solid everyday knife for a reasonable price range.
