Benchmade vs. Kershaw - Which would would you prefer?

Look for the Kershaw RAM coming out in January 08 ?

It is supposed to open and close like an AXIS lock but it also has an index finger flipper as well. Thats three ways to open it, stud, wrist action and index flipper. One hand only, open, and close. I for one will be buying it as soon as it is available. Cant wait!

What say you Kershaw any news on when it will be available ??

If you like that idea, then try to get a SOG Vulcan:

I think at the moment Kershaw has far more exciting new models. Only the classic BM models like the 710 or the now discontinued 806 compare.

Neither one is better than the other. They both serve a different purpose. Quality and F&F and the same, IMO. Handle both and see which ones you prefer. I enjoy both, but I give the edge to Benchmade for the Axis lock.

Im new to the forum but not new to knives and a long time lurker here. I would have to say kershaw for AO. They make a wide variety of AO products that I have only heard good things about. Go over to the Kershaw subforum and look around. The Bumps (both Spec and Speed) are awsome and so are the cyclones from what i hear.

Having said that the benchmade knives are very good as well but i would look into them more if i wanted a non-AO.

(btw, i have a spec bump on order and im pumped :D)

Absolutely agree with HoB.
IMHO out of these two makers today I would choose Kershaw without hesitation even a second. Kershaw has many very interesting designs, variety of steels, good price. Plus Kershaw will sharpen serrations on your knife, if you need (or you can get Spydie Sharpmaker)

Both great companies with quality knives...but if your looking to spend $100 or less, then go with Kershaw and you cant go wrong. I've handled a bunch of kershaw knives and they never let me down.

Quality knives with low prices = Kershaw.

From Boatsai 117:

If you REALLY want a kershaw, I would recommend the blur or the speed bump for the price range that you are talking about. BUT, for the same price you can get a benchmade griptilian which will perform a lot better than the kershaws

Perform better in what way? I've got the SG2 and S30V blur, a few grips including the D2 grip, and the Ritter M2, 154C, 440C. Can you tell me what makes them better than the blurs, or is it just your opinion? Joe

Nice knife batosai117. Do you have one. If so how do you like it? It seems a little pricey though.

It is a great knife, really thick for a folder too, .16" I believe that comes out to 4mm for those metric people. It holds it edge well, and has zero blade play. The clip allows the knife to be completely concealed except for the clip of course. Easy to put away and pull out from your pocket. With a little practice you can pull the knife out and flip it open in a second or two with the finger flipper. Almost like a kershaw speed bump mixed with a benchmade griptilian, that's why I like it.

I forgot the price, I found mine at "american light" for $100 usd. Probably cheaper than that on ebay. Besides, I've been purchasing my SOGs from those guys for a while now, so they give me discounts :).

I like Kershaw's AO folders better than BM's, but I like BM's designs/steel selection better than Kershaw. In terms of build quality they're pretty much identical around the same price point, although a $200 Benchmade will obviously be better put-together than a $90 Kershaw.

Probably my opinion more than anything, but I've steered away from kershaw for a while now. I do like the way the blurs look and feel, but I favor my benchmades and SOGs now. I just like the stronger locks and blade materials better. I wasn't referring to the S30V blur, just the regular one. I still have yet to see a blur in the Sandvic steel, just the 440a still floating around.

Beside, the griptilians have been time tested over and over. The axis lock is just pure genius. It locks even when the knife is dirty, full of mud, or ramed in sand. Not to mention the 1000 pound test (which sog also has with the arc-lock). I've had problems with the liner lock being part of a "tactical" knife for some time now, so the axis and arc-locks seemed to fix that. Now I can stab things without ruining my fingers.

In the long haul, it's probably my opinion and how I feel about kershaw. It was a great starting knife company for me, but after I got a hold of my first benchmade, there was no turning back.

Check out the JYD2. yeah it isnt AO, but it opens like a rocket, holds a great edge, and has a great liner lock (very thick lock). If you want to spend the extra money, get the TiSG2 JYD2. Even better and blows alot of BMs out of the water.

or just go with what out friend TKC said. Mini-cyclone (i would trust TKC's opinion just cause of the customs she colects).

I don't care for recurves or liner locks. BM gets the majority of my knife spending money. I do like how Kerhaw's flippers work but the lack of the axis lock is a deal breaker. Not trying to put down any company just MHO. I will get a ZT300 though ;)

For you Benchmade fans checkout the Zero Tolerance 0500 MUDD knife it has the Hawk lock which I believe is similar to the axis and arc lock's:thumbup and it has a 154 CM blade like the griptilians (I have one, a grip that is) and the RAM knife that I mentioned in the above thread. I 'm hoping these knives are as good as the Benchmade's as I am a fan of Kershaw knives but I also really like the one hand open and close type of knife.
