Sent in my old AFO for a new spring only. Couple weeks later I was told "No springs available, they are discontinued - but we can offer you a $250 voucher for a new model AFO. You pay another $50 plus tax & shipping" I thanked the guy and asked for my old AFO back.
The knife was sent back in pieces to my local dealer. The frame was stamped from the inside with some kind of tool, creating a depression area where the Pivot shaft inserts, preventing it from seating flush. This prevents the knife from being reassembled therefore useless.
I've contacted Benchmade three more times since picking up the knife with no response.
Any thoughts? I think I'm out of luck on this one

Damaging the knife further is kind of BS, but offering you a $300 knife for $50 isn't too shabby. Not really familiar with their warranty details, but if the knife/parts have been discontinued, what else are they supposed to do?

Seems a little unprofessional that they would not notify you about the spring prior to disassembly and destruction. I would probably try to send Benchmade Benchmade a direct message here. I’ve only had to use Benchmade warranty once in over 25 years and had no issues.

Right, not a bad discount. I wanted my knife back in the condition I sent it to them in. So, I'm *warning you guys here that if you send your knife in for repairs you may not like the outcome. The half inch diameter auto spring can be had for about 2 bucks at a couple online shops. I regret sending it in for this. Not a discontinued or unavailable part. I'm not the first with a bad story regarding these people. Anyway, it's disrespectful and unprofessional to damage someone's property like that. I'm just a newbie to this forum though - thanks for chiming in

I sent a Buck Mayo in for repair and they no longer stock the pivot pin it needed. They called and gave me the option of ~$300 on-line credit or they could return the knife. Since the problem was an occasional up/down play with a still safe lock up, I had it returned. It can be returned back to Buck for credit anytime in the future by me or someone else. The Mayo is a unique knife, so it’s not going back.

Benchmade owes you a free knife.

that stamping and not reassembling the knife as it was sent in, is nonsense. they owe ya something, since they ruined your knife.

I've had bad run with benchmade warranty in the past. they resharpened a sharp knife I told them not to resharpen and removed millimeters of steel and it was a poorly done wide edge. so years of use eliminated for no reason and a poor edge, is my experience with benchmade...oh and they never fixed the warranty issue either. between their high prices and poor customer service abilities.......I just don't really spend much of my money at benchmade anymore.

Update: Thanks for the comments guys. I finally got a reply from Benchmade Customer Service - only after I answered their *Feedback Request* I gave them a 1 star, and explained what happened and that I would recommend them IF they made it right. They won't confirm any damage on their end but they do still offer that voucher if I send back my old reliable. Still giving me the "it's discontinued blah blah, and we'd never intentionally damage your stuff"
I'm not crying but man I loved that old AFO.
Main point here is: BEWARE of the warranty repair at Benchmade. If you can find a spring at knife kits or other site - then do it yourself.
I found someone who has been polite and offering to take a look and repair this. I think he's a long time forum member here also. I'll keep you updated

Granted, it's been a while since I interacted with BM warranty dept or customer service but they've always been top-notch in my book. This includes fixing a then out-of-production liner lock (believe it was a dark star IIRC) and sending me new pivot screws and axis springs when I wrecked my old ones on a 940CF.

This is a bit disconcerting though. I hope they make it right. Seems to me you're owed recompense.

Do you have pictures of the stamped area? I'm really curious what they did that limits reassembly and certainly would change my thoughts on the interaction.

It's seem silly that they didn't reassemble the knife when done unless there was a big safety issue without the spring in there, which I would think would've been disclosed.

The one or 2 times I had to use their CS they've been pretty good, though they don't listen/read well for the customer requests/response (replqcings things that don't need fixed or sharpening a knife that doesn't need sharpening by them).

I'm unable to upload images here. Maybe since I'm still new, not enough posts. I'll keep trying. I actually just received the knife back today from Adams Knife Works dot com. Cool people there, friendly and been in business since 1987. They reassembled this AFO with a new spring and she's good to go! I've very happy to have this thing back. They gave permission btw to mention them here. Check them out for cool knives, repair and in house custom work. Good people there.
As for the company that made this knife - Eh, not happy. They only responded when I left a ONE STAR feedback, stating I would recommend them if they had not destroyed my knife. That's the short story. Don't send anything to them for repair my friends. Reach out to Adams Knife Works
