Bought 2 Benchmades last year, took a chance that I'd get a sharp blade this time. But nope! 940-1 and a bugout were both dull as could be.

So this is not new news. As much as I want to love Benchmade, there is a well deserved reputation for dull blades leaving the factory. Yeah the customer can send in, shipping is even covered most of the time, but I didn't buy the knife so Benchmade and USPS can hold it for me.

So Benchmade, when will you start working on qc to get edges correct the first time? I was bouncing back and forth on my last purchase, and went with another company because I'm tired of sending them back when I first get them.

Recently bought a 940-2 and mini adamas. Both edeges were sharper or as sharp as any other knife I’ve purchased.

Mine have been hit and miss from Benchmade. The last one I bought was a 940-2 and it wasn’t what I’d call sharp, though not truly “dull”.
It had a 20 degree per side edge, with a pronounced and coarse scratch pattern.
Easy enough to bring to a finished edge, but I’d prefer if they put a 15 degree per side edge like they claim they do.

I purchased a custom shop Tanto Griptilian direct from Benchmade about a month ago and it was tied for the dullest knife I’ve ever purchased. I will say this though—the grinds were perfectly even and aside from two incorrect size screws that were sticking through the scales and almost touching the blade, the fit and finish was also perfect. Benchmade has already sent me replacement screws, though the knife is out for sharpening (I’m not dealing with M4 and I’m not great at sharpening anyway) so I haven’t had a chance to make sure they’re the correct size.

I’m not sour on Benchmade because they have great designs, high quality materials, and are an American company which I appreciate. I guess the information is out there that a couple of the same type of issues repeatedly make it through QC when they shouldn’t have, so future customers just need to weigh the possible pros/cons of doing business with them.

I got an M4 Mini-Grip out of the Custom Shop
Try a honesteel on it, and don't let it get too far ot of shape. 👍.

Once I get the Grip back from REK I was just planning on using my Sharpmaker and a stropping it to maintain the edge. I’ve messed up too many knives with my KME and don’t have the time or patience to become reasonably good with it, so I’ll see how this route works. Probably sell the KME honestly (I at least put some decent working edges on a couple Mora’s and old kitchen knives, but they ain’t pretty…).

We must be Twin Brothers from Different Mothers! I have both of those sharpening systems also. But I still grab my F Dick honesteel for the impxortant stuff

Mine are typically acceptable. They aren't vert good at deburring in my experience. A few passes on my strop and they usually perform like this... Also to be clear, my strop is just an old piece of leather belt I glued onto a piece of wood. I do not use any compounds either. I just rough it up with sandpaper on occasion. It worked for my Grandfather, and they work like that for me. :)

Damn, I gotta sharpen my knives! No chance I'd get through a Uline catalog page on edge like that with my Bugout.

They probably have better things to do than comfort people that can’t touch up a blade.
Yeah real cute when you have to "touch up" s90V.

So it's the mindset of don't worry customer you can take the time and cost of finishing the knife for us - Benchmade

I don't think so. I buy knives to use them, not to fix them for the factory
I love Benchmade, just want them to do better.

I've got 5 Benchmades with S90V steel. Take care of them, and don't let them get too dull: you can bring them back on a simple honing steel.
