Benchmade with flatest and thinnest handle

You should put the 530 and 531 side by side and decide for yourself, the 531 is the same with upgrade G-10 scales and different blade design, the 531 is stronger in my opinion as my 530 was very flimsy side to side and yes it was new.

I looked at both since I was partial to the blade shape and material of the 531. After fondling, I ended up getting the 530. I don't think the angle of the 531 is much different than the 530, but it is a hair heavier and the G10 handles were rougher on the edges. I still may pick a 531 one up sometime when I see a deal.

My only gripe on the 530 is the blade will rattle a little (two nubs in handle near tip) if the blade pivot is left loose. This may go away as it breaks in.

I have 3 BMs w/ Axis locks, and all three have that little rattle you're talking about. I could tighten them up and get rid of it, but I prefer the action the way they are.

I'll join the chorus regarding the 531, though. Definitely my favorite light, thin folder.

There was a model that was known to have a rattle in the stop pin. I don't remember which one...

It is certainly not a common characteristic of the Axis lock though. I just shook about thirty Axis locks in my drawer, not a sound from any of them.

the 707 is also a very small and thin knife both in thickness and overall footprint of the knife

The 530 wins the award for thinness of blade. A plain old factory version in 440C was my first Benchmade, and here's an example of a limited Knifeworks run (530-1302) given Gold Class refurbishing. This thing (in S30V) has been given a wicked convex edge and is arguably one of the sharpest knives ever to grace my collection...

No argument that the 530-531 would be the absolute thinnest/lightest option. However my vote would have to go to the 940. For the marginal difference in thickness and weight you win big in how much knife you get. Two qualifiers for me, 1 not the biggest fan of the "spear point" on the 530, not as strong or versatile as the 940. And 2 my handle is OsborneFan. ;)

I agree, the 940 is a really surprising knife (IMO). I didn't think it would feel so small in my pocket, yet so big in my hand (blade-wise). I honestly don't carry my 531 anymore due to holes in all of my pockets from those little thumb-studs. I'm contemplating removing the studs as you really don't need them on that knife. It just catches on everything! Also, the split arrow clip and herring-bone G10 pattern are also tough on pants pockets. As far as being sharp, mine was extremely sharp out of the box.
