benchmade's for Christmas....guess not

It's not a matter of deep discounts or quality imports. Retailers had to offer those discounts for Benchmades to be competitive with other 'made in the USA' offerings.

A $135 940 stacks up very well to a Spyderco PM2/Military/Manix2, ZT 0350/0566/0770

A $180 940 does not. That's Hogue, ZT0801 territory.

I'm not sure I'd agree at $135, but at $180 it's a complete no-brainer. Even with inflated PM2 prices, I can almost buy two PM2s for that price, and it is at least as good a knife. And that PM2 is a completely made-in-the-USA knife.

Kinda. You're assuming the Hogue and ZT outperforms the 940, which is questionable and only answered by the market demand for each.

I'm not assuming that any knife outperforms the others. I'm basing it on $180 for a small aluminum framed/axis lock/154cm knife versus a small full titanium, bearing pivot flipper.

Fact is that the best comparable knives to the 940 are closer to the $135 price tag than the $180 price tag.

That's coming from someone who is a huge huge fan of the knife. I owned a 943 for a while and loved it. It's the only knife I've ever regretted getting rid of.

I understand you're comparing actual value, where I'm talking about perceived value, which adds a bit more to the mix than just the basic materials. The thread discussing BM pricing that's going on 12 pages now is a back and forth about just this difference.

I have been a Benchmade Fan Boy since the beginning of my collecting.

The fact that a discount was available with registration at certain sites was a significant plus for me.

Their recent change in policy and lack of discounts will really change my buying habits unfortunately.

Glad I purchased what I could, when I purchased as I may not have done that earlier without the discount.

My collection is more of an accumulation, but it wouldn't have as many BM @ the new price points.

Are you listening BM?

Price increases are inevitable and normal business practices. Business need to account for inflation, cost of materials, labor, ect. But that's not what benchmade is doing. The effective prices for all benchmades across the board are going up 25%. That's huge, and benchmade isn't making any money from it. Product is still the same prices for the dealers. So benchmade is doing this why......?
They could issue a statement explaining just as little of what's going on but they would rather stay silent and let us speculate. How is this good business Yo Mama....

Among the 15 largest U.S. retailers, operating margins in the holiday quarter last year were 11 percent, compared with 9 percent in the preceding nine months. Amid the year-end shopping frenzy, these companies padded their bottom lines, on average, by roughly one-quarter. ( From Bloomberg Bussinessweek ) 25% sounds familiar.

and in English that means....?

Just bought 2 made in America folders from another company other than Benchmade. After the price jump what was usually a no brainier (a Benchmade purchase ) I ended up looking at other makers and purchasing from the other maker. So I bought something I didn't really want and actually spent a bit more due to the BM price hikes. I may buy another BM from time to time but as far as that brand being my go to brand? Not so much.

I just did the same thing. I was planning on buying a Contego, but with the new pricing it was almost $180.

Just bought a Ritter mini from the place that works with knives, but no more code. Knew I should've ordered a few days ago. It's a spare, so now I'm set with a spare for each BM I carry so I'll be set. Dang - wish they wouldn't have done that. Or if they were going to, offer something with the bump, like g10 scales. That'd rock! I know, keep dreamin'. Ha.

Joe, Knifeworks is a paid dealer, no need for the "code speak".

As far as the pricing is concerned, people will vote with their wallets. No big deal either way there are plenty of knives out there. For me, I'll stick with the LE models.

Thanks C., I've come to that conclusion all on my own. And on LE's, that's all I bought last year. I'm happy with the rest.

Exactly.

I've purchased ~55 new Benchmade knives since joining BF in 2006. My first good knife was a Emerson Benchmade I bought in 1995 (still have it). BM is price fixing plain and simple. I am done with them until their policy changes. I'll spend my knife budget money with other companies and on the used market.
