I just got back a batch of Benchmades that I sent in for Lifesharp service. It took about 3 working days and that included installing barrel spacers on my 710-1, free of charge.

The 710-1 is my favorite knife, bar none. Four inches of sleek, sexy recurved M390 goodness and the superb Axis lock. With a polished Contego deep carry clip and matching barrel spacers it is now absolute folding knife perfection.

The M390 holds an edge for a ridiculously long time and didn't really even need sharpening even after two years of carry. Benchmade sharpened it anyway and the results were nothing short of amazing.

I opened the knife and went for the good ole' arm hair test. Much to my surprise, it didn't glide along, removing hair like it had it the past. It seemed to be catching. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the edge was in fact slicing lengthwise into the hairs, effectively filleting the individual strands.

This knife is now insanely sharp. The sharpest knife I've ever handled.

Nice work Benchmade!

Turn around may vary on workload but my two recent Life Sharp experiences were great! They even replaced all the screws and the springs on my mini Grips.
Now all my used BM's will go visit home for a spa weekend.

FML!

I just used this knife to open a box, and dropped it on the concrete floor literally 48 hours after getting it back. Broke the f-ing tip off. Called Benchmade and they have no replacement blades.

Please excuse me while I go vomit.

How much of the tip broke off? My 555 fell on tile and a bit of the tip broke, Lifesharp re-profiled the tip

I'm sure it could be reprofiled to a different shape but it will never be the same.

I think I might go throw it in the lake so I'll never have to look at it again.

Oh, man... :( Suggestion: call and ask if they can use a blade from one of the M390 710-1401 knives. It doesn't have the crowned spine, but it is M390. It isn't an exact replacement but they might do it.

That sucks... Maybe they will have a replacement available after these have been out for awhile.

The problem is that the 710-1 and 710-2, which had a similar blade, were disco'd several years back and were limited runs. BM probably had a small stock of replacement blades that ran out some time back.

Oh well, now it's just another knife. Use it like it was meant to be used. It's still a good knife. It's still good steel. It's now what it was always meant to be: a da** good tool.

I gotta start paying more attention. I don't know why I was thinking he had a Ritter in M390 :o

Cheer up, that never happens to me... :o :D

:D I've never owned a 710, but the 390 version is very cool. It would suck to be in the same situation as the OP though, and not be able to replace the blade should something happen.

I erased my first comment. Wasn't bad but not helpful. Give someone a chance to reprofile it. You may be surprised how well it turns out. Send it to Benchmade with a letter detailing your love for the knife. Someone will do the best they can and you may not even be able to tell the difference after it is reprofiled a bit and the new metal thinned out some. It's worth a shot and will be better than it is now.

Benchmade pulled a rabbit, I mean a blade, out of a hat for the OP. He's all taken care of.

I've got a question regarding Benchmade's LifeSharp service. I sent them an email about it but figured I'd see if anyone had any info here while I wait for them to reply.

Is it possible to request the grind angle they put on the blade you send them? I'm not looking for anything crazy. The edge that's on my Griptilian is terrible. It looks like the guy/gal who put the edge on that thing did so at five minutes to quitin' time on a Friday. It's very steep and the bevel gets smaller near the heel of the blade. Maybe if I send it to them they'll immediately see it's a bad edge and reprofile it. I don't really know what the angle of the edge is now but wold it be crazy to put a ~35º grind on a Griptilian? Saw a guy on YouTube put a 34º on one with a Lansky set and it seemed like a nice edge for that blade. It's not a hard use knife in my rotation; more of an EDC when I want to carry something larger than my Mini Grip (which has a great factory edge on it).

Thanks for any input.

If it were me, and the edge angle was really bothering me, rather then send it in with special angle requests I would use it a whole bunch and dull the heck out of it and send it in for a sharpening.

With any luck, they would sharpen it to the correct angle and return it good as new.

Good luck.

I sent my 551 in for sharpening. It came back with a broader edge than what it had when I bought it. It now is the sharpest knife I own. I can shave with it. I debated on whether I should send it in, I'm very happy that I did. Quick turnaround too.
