Benchmark backpacker or Rough Rider Stockman?

Get the Rough Rider. Better a good cheap knife than a bad one. A good cheap knife is a nice thing. A bad cheap knife is just junk. Rough riders and known for being made of decent steel, taking and holding a decent edge, and holding together nearly as well as much more expensive knives. Rough Rider is sort of the Mora of China.

So I hear. SO that's settled then I guess. I'll get the RR.

I never heard of Benchmark til I read your post. In fact, I misread it as "Benchmade". Since the logo is styled to look like Benchmade's, it is no surprise. Why consider knock-off junk? Buy the real thing from a real manufacturer.

Rough Riders are okay, but not as Case XX.

Finally, it's just $20. Don't overthink it.

If I were you I'd go ahead and purchase the RR Stockman and also look into buying a Mora #1 which is a proven classic and around 12$ or so and a fine fixed blade however if you want a more robust fixed blade take a look at the Old Hickory Butcher knives.

For a fixed blade get a Buck Paklite Skinner a good knife made in the USA for $20, or get pretty much any style Mora. Fot another $10 or so get a condor Rodan or Bushlore.

Or you could get an opinel if you want a folder under $20.

If you don't mind making a sheath, many kitchen knives would make excellent outdoor knives. The old USA-made Chicago Cutlery, Opinel paring knives, and Old Hickory full-tang models, for example.

Check out the AG Russell Woodswalker too, $20 including a nice leather pocket sheath.

So many options...

I just bought the backpacker a couple of days ago. I like it, it came out of the box shaving sharp. I like the micarta grips and with a little elbow grease you can get a nice polish on the blade.

that's my 2 cents,
Shawn

Benchmark is of poor quality, and doesn't take a keen edge. One of my neighbor's has a Benchmark folder. He knows I like knives, so he has let me hold it. Feels like junk, but that is my opinion. ALSO...... The backpacker looks like a rip-off of the Izula. If you compare the two....you will see the similarities. I'd rather spend more money and get a real, high quality product, then a cheap alternative.

But, that is just me.
Wow I really disagree with the backpacker looking like a ripoff of the Izula. The original used 1095, but now its 420ss, much smaller than the izula, with hollow grind, an a much thinner handle of linen (not canvas) micarta. Uncoated Satin finish, black handle. The backpacker is really more of a budget gentlemans edc fixed blade (I guess it's also an option for ultralight backpackers though) where the Izula is definitely a wilderness survival necker that makes a decent choice for an edc. Please explain what you meant...

everything about the Benchmark is good except the steel. Plain 420 does suck, and won't hold an edge long. If you can get the knife for 10 bucks like I did, its worth it. I wish it was still in 1095 though. I prefer that steel in pretty much every way. Bad move by BM
