Hi.

Is there anything that needs to be known before bending a clip-it back to original position?

I've bent clips before, by removing them and using a couple of sets of padded pliers.
Just take the ends in the jaws and barely bend downwards. Don't go to far and check, as you go. It's really pretty simple to do.

I have this problem with my Manix. Is heating it up before bending a good idea?

I'm not a blacksmith, but I would be concerned about heating it before bending. It would possibly lose its springiness unless you do the correct heat treating again after bending it.

Just be careful when bending it, so it doesn't get any kind of fractures that will weaken it.

You could also call Spyderco and ask if they would sell you a new one, or have one made by one of the excellent people in the makers forum (STR comes to mind.)

No. Unless I'm wrong, Spyderco still heat treats it's clips for strength and that would cause it to loose a good amount of it's stiffness.

I would take the clip off and bend it with your fingers. It's a spring essentially so remember that you'll have to bend it past where you want it to be. You can also use a pair of pliers as Jill suggested.

I bend Spyderco clips all the time. Don't ask me why, but it's always my Spydies that have bent clips. Never the Benchmades or the Sebenzas or the Striders. Just the Spydies.

I disassemble the clip, put the clip in a padded vise and bend it ever so slightly. I test the clip bend by holding the clip against the knife handle. If all looks good, I put loctite on the screw threads and reassemble until the next week.

Do you use the Spydercos more perhaps? :)

Actually no. I carried a Benchmade Griptilian every day for almost 3 years straight, and never had the clip bend on me once. My Sebenza has been carried often since...... forever it seems.

I'm not sure if the issue is a matter of the Spyderco clip shape, or the steel used to produce them. But they snag on a lot of stuff, and once they get bent out, they don't spring back. My guess is that it is the shape of the clip. That little lip at the end of the clip is probably the evil "Spyderco Snagger".

This is only a problem with the standard Spyderco clips. The newer Endura4 style clip is even worse in this regard than the Military style clip. I haven't had any problems with the wire clip on my Caly3, and that has been carried regularly since last summer.

At least they aren't like the old style Endura and made of molded plastic. I broke one of those off and there wasn't any fixing it.

I heard a rumor that they're going to be changing the Military's clip. My favorite part about it was the simplicity and the curve. Make a LH version if you want, but I want to keep the curve.

One of the reasons I haven't picked up a Dragonfly. I'm waiting till they come out with the G-10/Wire clip version.

Spyderco's wire clips are great. Innovative and they have multiple uses. However, I find it hard to retighten the clip if it becomes loose without using a pair of pliers or something.
