After getting a cake server ready for traeting I took it to a friends house to put the bends in it. The first bend went great. The second one snapped the piece in half. We were using a 20 ton hydraulic press on 440C. Any suggestions or input?

At the very least, it should be fully annealed. A severe bend should be done at red heat.

I reckon even a 45 degree bend needs to be done at red heat. You can already see signs of plastic deformation at that angle and those stresses make for a more fragile knife if dropped.

Was it hardened? Annealed? Mystery supplied state? What type of dies did you use? V opening radius of dies? Angle of Punch? Radius of punch?

I had an issue with 1095 cracking during bending due to laser hardening at the edge coupled with bending to a U-shape in one hit. We decided to send the parts out to be annealed to dead soft hoping to fix the problem. When the parts came back they were so soft they would not hold together during bending and tore completely in half.

The steel was 440 C I got from Aldo (annealed). I dont know about the specifics of the dies, angle or radius.

You might consider using 410 SS next time around. Most cake servers, spatula's and burger flippers are made of it............................................IN STOCK NOW!
