For your consideration I have the one & only Chop Muk #1 donated by Rob Babcock, son of udtjim.Thank you Rob!
This is the last knife udtjim had made for him by JK Knives & sadly,he passed away before getting to use it.
Poor Jim was on a lot of meds before passing & got the name of the knife mixed up apparently,it is called the ChopMuk according to JK & as you all can see,it is one big awesome chopper!
Here's Rob's words in his first email to me about donating the "Chipmonk Chopper/ChopMuk for Hanna's cause.
"As I mentioned, my dad was good friends with JK.* He and John designed a one-of called the "Chipmonk Chopper".* It's kind of like a big kukri on steroids!* When the knife was finished Dad was in the hospital and not very strong so he had John send the knife to me.* During the last visit with him I showed him a pic of the knife on my cell phone.* He was excited and looked forward to seeing it when he got out.* In the meantime he told me to take it out on my next camping trip and give it a good test.* I assured him I would.* Well, sadly he never made it out; he passed away a few months later. As promised I took the Chipmonk Chopper out and put it thru its paces, and posted some action shots online at the JK forum.
Dad had a minimum of 600 knives, and at least 50-70 of them were JK Handmade!* While I treasure those knives, I decided I wanted to give away a few to honor my dad.* I had intended to do a give-away with the CC but given the issues facing Hanna I feel donating it to be auctioned to benefit her would be even better.* I know that would make Dad smile!"
There you have it,the tale of the one & only ChopMuk,the last knife commissioned by udtjim.
I didn't get to know Jim,but I know he will be happy knowing this one is going for such a great cause like Rob said.
I would have bought it for myself, but have another I need to pay for so some lucky dog gets a chance to own this beast.
Used once by Rob & needing a new home.
It is made of 3/16" thick 01 with the heat treat finish left on with a nice convex edge.
The blade is 9 1/16" from tip to scales with a cutting edge of 8".
The hight at the hump is 2 15/16" and at the ricaso is 2 3/8".
OAL is 14 1/16".
The handle is 5" & made of black micarta with aluminum pins & tube.
Here's a couple of comparison shots with my JK Kephart...
Here is a shot of the rounded spine,(nice touch IMO)
And an in hand shot, nice & hand filling.
And the sheath.(in an emergency you could make a pair of sandals out of it
)
Thanks for looking & please send some smoke/say a prayer for all vivtims of the big C.
