Today I stamped a piece of annealed 1084. I got a nice impression but it bowed the blade a bit. Any tips to prevent this? Maybe I slammed it to hard. Wouldn't this add unneeded stress to the steel and is this blank still ok?
Thanks.

Gine - Yes, the blank is still fine. I do that all the time, not sure how to prevent it from happening. Just flip the blade over and giver' a few whacks to straighten it back out. You might consider using a wooden mallet for this as it won't leave any hammer marks in the annealed blade.

This is why I got away from stamping and went with etching. Much more controllable as well. I now only use my stamp to mark my sheaths so it wasn't a wasted purchase

Peter, thanks I did flip it over and whack the other side and it worked just fine. Next time I will use a plastic or wood mallet because I did mark the blade a bit.

It might be wise to stress relieve it before the acual heat treat. That is why Bob Loveless started using an etch.

I stamped it on a concrete floor, and I always normalize before I harden. I want an etcher but I need other equipment upgrades first.
