I've noticed that too and wondered the same. The 'How it's Made' video from which that image was taken is fairly old and I don't know if Case has made some more recent adaptations to the induction annealing process to account for the different sizes of blades. Having said that, I own a whole bunch of Case pocketknives, mostly 1990s and later, and haven't noticed any significant issues with edge retention in the rearward portion of the edge on any of them.The discolored area extends way farther forward than seems ideal to me. Doesn't anyone else make frequent use of that part of the blade?
