very dissapointed using mg helle temagmi to baton with the grain of a pie e of wood less ghen ghe thickness of my wrist, and it out about 6 mm which is alot. and once the knife was part way in ghe wood i used a wedge.

hah that is major crap, beautiful knife, but i didnt know i had to frame in in order to prevent fun from use.

that wood i batoned, was going to be turned into a spoon

maybe a maker could chime in on this or someone more knowledgeable then i am. Why would it stay bent, ive batoned plenty with smaller cheaper knives and nothing at all has happened. even to my mora. my question is a knife that bends but does not come back to true is that a bad ht?

Bummer. I wonder what Helle would have to say about that...

i sent them an email so well see, hopefully they will make good on there warrenty, but i dont want to send the knife overseas like that, i dont consider what i did to be abuse, on a scandi grind id of maybe expected a rolled edge batoning, not a bent blade, edge i can fix bent blade i cannot

What the Helle....?

Good one, Chuck! :D

Be sure to let us know how they respond! Inquiring minds want to know!

Helle's laminated blades will bend rather than break, but they're really intended for cutting, not batoning. That being said, you can probably straighten it in a vise, or by tapping it with a hammer (use a thin piece of wood to avoid dinging the blade).

i thought about that, and i understand the premise behind it being a cutting tool, i have folders that wouldnt do that, i batoned enough to put a wedge into it, because i know it isnt meant for batoning

One mans use is another mans abuse. Sorry about your blade. Expensive too. Not for nothing but that blade looks a little thin to be batoning ? Although i have batoned my Mora & my CS RECON 1 folder. Maybe it is a fluke. Keep us posted on the outcome please. :(

Batoning is a risky business.
All it takes is to hit one wrong knot or grain, and it's bent or broken.
The same knife may have been able to baton thru a whole cord of wood that was more straight-grained.
You do your batoning, and you take your chances. Everybody knows it.
Sorry to hear about the damage to your nice knife.

"Batoning and Hidden Tang Knives " is a pdf which explains a lot !! I have it on my computer but can't find a way to get it on the thread ! Please read it !!

How about posting a pic? Laminated blades can often be bent back into shape.
