I got some steel today from Admiral and i noticed it was bent a very little bit, I dont plan on using this steel for a while, as I want to start out on o-1 and l6, but I went ahead and got some ats34 and some 440C, the ats is 3/16 thick and the 440C is 1/8 inch thick, I dont plan on doing my own heat treating but I have a grill I could get pretty hot. Is there any way I could straiten this and is there anythinig I can ask for to prevent this in the future or is it one of those things you have to live with, thanks alot for answering all of my questions, I know I ask alot of them.

If you want to be sure of getting bend free steel for stock removal. Order it PRECISION GROUND. Costs more. ATS-34 is hard to come by in that condition though. O-1 and A-2 is found in that condition quite often. The grinding process also takes off the scale from the mill. So you just take it straight to the grinder without the added work of removing it yourself.

With carbon steels you can get away with bending in slightly cold, but its better to do it hot. I wouldn't recommend bending the stainless cold. You might get away with it if you're careful though. Only do it hot if you have experience forging.

In some cases I have made small knives from slightly bent sections and patterned it according to the bend and ground more off the thick sides. Make sense? Best of luck!

Annealed stainless is no problem to straighten cold. just put it in a vise and make slight corrections. Or if you are using the three brass rods, that will work too.:D

I can use the brass rod method to bend 3/16th ATS?! Seem pretty thick, but Ill give it a try. Thanks

The three brass rods?

Okay, this is a new one on me. Can you elaborate for me, please?

Thanks!

precision ground doesnt mean it wont be bent!

Best bet, order it in 3' lengths and get at least 5 at a time and have them tape all 5 together tightly before shipping........but it still gets bent........

the thing you gotta do is learn how to straighten it! Not fun, but its gotta be done.

Alright, Ill try the brass rod method soon, gotta get the rods first. How long to I need to hold it strait in there, the only info about this I have is from quickly reading Wayne Goddards book. I dont need to heat it or anything. Just makin sure one last time, cause that stuff is expensive. Thanks alot.

I cut 2 pieces of angle iron and welded 1/2 rod on each end of one flat and welded one rod in the middle of the flat. They lay flat on the vise. There are many other way to do it.

Thanks for mentioning Goddard's book DGrantD. I have read that before and it obviously didn't sink in.:o

Just lettin you know the book I saw it in was the wonder of knife making, not the 50 dollar knife shop,
BTW what is an arbor press and 4-5-6 blocks?

An arbor press is a hand press that uses mechanical advantage to press a ram. They come in various sizes and can press 1/2 ton up to 3 tons. 4-5-6 blocks are precision machinists blocks that are 6in high, 5in wide and 4 inches thick.

Was thinking "bent", like in the warpage aspect guys. Like "as-rolled" condition. My mistake for not clarifying. Then yes, obviously, precision ground can be bent afterwards from the handling of suppliers, distributors and shipping.
