So I got another 4 foot piece of 1084 and cut out one blank yesterday. I noticed that the tang is slightly bent. And when I say slightly bent I mean, when I set flat scales on it theres maybe a millimeter or probably closer to a half a millimeter in play. Is there a way of bending this back or will it snap if I throw it in a vice and give it a quick pull?

If it has not been H/Ted straighten all you want.

No it hasn't yet. And I will definitely give it a try. I was just afraid of snapping it but, it really doesn't need that much straightening. Just a quick pull should do it. Thanks!

I get bent stock all the time. Got some yesterday and the wood it was attached to was broken so you can guess how straight the metal was.

bent steel for forging is no problem. bent steel for stock removal is. I won't buy stock removal steel from a place that sends it bent. Aldo, Pop, Sheffield, have always sent me straight steel, well packed so it doesn't bend even though the shipping folks throw it around.

Mine is never bent bad just kinda arched a little. I said i get it bent all the time but more like a couple of times. The last time, piece of pine it was on had a knot and that's where it broke.

I've gotten bowed 1084, but it was easy to straighten annealed. I seem to remember reading that Aldo got new racks so that it would happen less frequently, but I'm not positive about that.

I don't really understand all the fuss about straightening a piece of bar stock to make a knife? It's part of the knife making process. Something that I've never given any thought to???

I was just making sure I could do it (without having to forge) and possible weakening the steel. All is good now. Its straight. She's tempering as we speak.

I guess if a guy didn't know, he just didn't know.:) Good to hear you're on the right track.
