Beowulf and Grendel .

Well here is a thread you could make a tapestry with . So many avenues to explore . I will definitely check out all the links . The book by Gardener sounds especially interesting as the movie while not specifically from Grendels perspective certainly showed a balanced outlook .

Did I mention the Witch is a fox ? Mostly it is because she gave as good as she got . She kept Beowulf in his place although her language could use a cleaning .

Isn,t it great what a childhood memory can bring about ?

Listen there me boys . this is a thread on books/movies .

B:T:W: Is that .50 Beowolf anything like the Barret(sp) .50 ? L:O:L

Not really. It is a funny looking cartridge that retains the same head and rim diameter as the 5.56 with a case that is pretty much straight and blown out to accept .499 diameter bullets. The case body is far larger than the head of the case and looks pretty damned funny. It's capable of getting 1800 FPS with a 400 grain bullet. Recoil is supposed to be around that of a 20 Gauge. While quite impressive, it's nowhere near what Barret's .50 BMG's are capable of. The great selling point is it's ability to give the standard AR-15 platform some real short range thumping power.

Bill I knew you would take the Troll,s side . L:O:L

Hey wait a minute ! Holy flashback Batman . You could build a moat with drawbridge around your place . Talk about security ! You wouldn,t need a fence . Toss the cameras . You wouldn,t want evidence anyway . Set yourself up as a guardian sage a la Monty Pythons : The Holy Grail : and allow any intruder in that can answer three questions . Knowing you they wouldn,t get past the first question . (What is the earliest known form of religion ? )

An integral trebuchet could take care of any applicants for entrance . A local dumpster would suffice as their final resting place/receptacle . Except for the ocassional scream wafting through the air there would be no evidence at all . ( Oh yeah , that and a loud thump . )

Thanks you guys . While I am only about 90% sure it is the book I was talking about the Movie was an absolute hoot .

Grendel was great . The Village witch was a fox .
Whatever the white creature in the water and cave was sent dentistry back to the middle ages .(Wait a minute that line doesn,t work here , L:O:L )

While I am sure great liberties were taken as to the screen writers version of the story I found it well done .

The behind the scenes portion only served to bring the actors to life instead of feeling like filler .

I am still going to hunt down the book I read as a child though I doubt I will ever find the same edition .:grumpy:

Also, Syd Allan has a comprehensive site listing all of the (modern English) translations of Beowulf at:

If you guys like retellings of the Beowulf saga, check out Grendel by John Gardener. It's told from Grendel's perspective, and it's absolutely brilliant.

There was an Australian animated film based on Gardener's book, entitled Grendel Grendel Grendel. I wish it was on DVD, and not just rare eBay bootlegs! I loved this as a kid... Beowulf was such a dink!

As per the Beowulf and Grendel film, I wonder if the reworked story was necessitated at all by a modest budget? I noticed that it was partly Canadian-produced.

Dunno, but the question's worth asking. Regardless, it was a really fine film. The cinematography was outstanding.

I hear a CGI film more faithful to the epic poem is in the works... tentatively. Whether it's STILL on the go... who knows?
