I'm looking to get a 2" (blade lengh) spyderco for my dad he curently caries an old and dull SAK or a lame gift set knife.

I'm considering knives like the Kiwi mercat jester and cricket.

The only one I'm not considering is the dragonfly cause i gave him one already, but it was a keep sake type thing.

Thanks!

I think the Kiwi may appeal to him. It's more "classic". But if he's into techno junkies, get him a Meerkat. Chances are he'll love the Phantom lock™. Good luck!
There may be also the Wegner Mouse as an alternative, or the Navigator (prefferably G10), if you can find one.
Other knives in the 2" range would be the Copilot, Pegassus and the Cricket (FRN or even better, SS). Some of them are pretty hard to find, though.

The cricket is great, but if I had to pick 1 of the knives you mentioned, I'd go with the kiwi(SS). The handle is so coumfy for such a little knife and razor sharp vg-10. Would make an awesome gift.

I think the Kiwi is a great idea. I just got a Jester and I'm very happy with it. It's a lot of little knife!

PS - Why don't you just sharpen his SAK for him? Not that a new Spydie isn't a good idea, but everyone needs a good, sharp SAK!!!

A more aggressive 2" knife is the Dodo. It seems like a much larger knife but it fits in the range being discussed here.

Personally, I would recommend the discontinued, but still available, Navigator ($29.95 @ SMKW). IMHO, it's one of the best designed and most useful small Spydies, particularly if you can somehow find one of the original G10 versions.

Knife11, I don't know if this makes any difference to you, but the length of the Kiwi's blade, from the hilt to the tip is 2 3/8" while the length of the sharpened portion is 1 7/8". The other 1/2" is part of the very nice choil that Spyderco includes into the design of the back of the blade and the front of the hilt to keep your fingers safer.:)

The SAK is just old.. it looks bad.

I thought that the dodo still needed some refining...on the lock for example. correct me if I'm wrong!

Navigator is nice, I've had more than one...He didn't like it...Go figure

Kiwi sonds like a winner...Anybody think that the kiwi is lame??

Now don't flame the poor guy that has a different opinion!

Thanks!

Got a link for that? Not seeing it.

Here's another vote for the original G10 Navigator. Just about the perfect small knife.

I'm not particularly fond of the almite coated aluminum handles. Grip is not great. I like the design just not the handle materials.

Won't flame anyone who thinks differently, but I love my Kiwis, work in a very PC government office and these little guys get smiles, while most other knives I've used got those "deer in the headlights" looks.

The all stainless version is very slim, the jigged bone nearly twice as thick if that might make a difference to your dad. I find the thicker one a bit easier to use myself.

Another knife to consider might be the Pegasus, I'm pretty sure John Jensen still has them, other dealers may too, can be had in PE or SE. If you are not familiar with it, it looks somewhat like a thinner, stainless steel handled version of the Navigator with a slightly shorter blade, just a hair under 2", as opposed to 2 1/8" for the Navigator. I find the stainless handles much less slippery than the almite ones on my almite Navigator.

BOK, pretty much agree with you concerning the almite Navigator, although I think its more a combination of the almite and the finish they put on it that makes it feel so slippery. My Herbst, Ayoob, and Toad, all almite handled knives, are not the least bit "slick" in the hand, while the Navigator is almost impossible to hold onto in spite of the slots. I even washed mine, several times, with both soap and alcohol, thinking the slickness might have been due to it being lubricated by the previous owner. Will have to keep my eyes open for a PE one in G10.

I love my ss pe dragonfly, off again for a new sheath.

Been carrying the bone kiwi since I got it, by far the sharpest spydie I've got. The only time I've gotten looks by using it was when I put the 4" fixed away to try the kiwi at work.

The Kiwi is a great little knife. Perfect fit and finish and a razor sharp VG-10 blade.

that green one would be perfect...Where do I get one like that?

That one is from Santa Fe Stoneworks, I ordered it directly from them. The scales on mine are Malachite, but it can be ordered with any of the stones or shells they work with for $160, or in dinosaur bone for $200. They are mostly made to order, and lead time was about 2 weeks when I got mine, so it might be a tad late to get one in time for Christmas. No picture of the Kiwi on their website, at least not last time I looked, but you can see the materials they use.

Knife11, I have a Kiwi that has become my EDC for work. I work in a federal office where I can carry, according to 18USC930,
a pocket knife with a blade of less than 2\1/2\ inches in length.
I dearly love that little knife and, as you may imagine, working in an office full of young attornies and accountants, as the Securities & Exchange Commission is, I need to show a bit od care about not disturbing the natives too very much, especially since 9/11/01. The standard Kiwi, with its bone scales, serves this purpose admirably well and the bone scales give the hilt some texturing to enhance my grip as well as a slightly larger hilt with which to hold the knife. The two choils that I mentioned in my prior post are just perfect for controlling cuts and the only improvement that I could suggest is a bit of file work on the spine of the blade behind the Spyder Hole. I have found that the lack of a clip has not bothered me as much as I thought that it might, but then I grew up carrying pocket knives before Mr. Glesser conceived of the pocket clip. The Kiwi is about as close as we will ever see Spyderco come to the traditional pocket knife, IMO.

A Kiwi with the jigged bone handle would be my suggestion, especially if he likes jigged bone since it was popular during his earlier years, very classic. If he likes doing tasks holding the knife like a scalpel, with the index finger on the back of the blade, the Jester's blade is the perfect shape for that.
