best .22 rifle

i am looking at getting a bolt action .22; don't want/need hi-end, just basic tack drivers that i can fire various ammo types...prime candidates are the savage mark 1 or 2, and a marlin 925...

current .22 is the notorious henry ar7, which has been my faithful backpacking rimfire for bear deterrent (not)...

I have 2- 10/22's 1 is the carbine & the other is the sporter, both have had a trigger job & both shoot pretty good but my favorite is my Savage 64FV  It will out shoot either of my 10/22's my next .22 will be the Savage markII with heavy barrel. If your savage is a MKII then all it needs is a little TLC & it will drive tacks;) The MKII is a alot more gun than the price tag shows ! some trigger work & a decent scope will usually fix the problem & for the bolt sticking...sounds like it needs a little cleaning. Hard to beat the little MKII for the money  Heck if you don't want it just send it my way :p

UGH! Not this again...

Just cut out the middle man and buy the $26,000 SxS rimfire double gun offered by Conneticut Shotgun. That way nobody can tell you their gun is better / cooler / more anything.

OR be:
1) cheap, and buy a Savage
2) smart, and buy a CZ
3) smarmy, and buy a Cooper

throw one out that hasnt been recommended yet. I collect older .22s and for the money the older Mossbergs are the best I own. Solid walnut stocks and accurate as all get out. You might need to do a restore but the stocks usually have some serious flame under all the crap. Look at the 44 or 144 for target and the 42 or 46B for field work. Oh, and most come with peep sites as well as scope mounts. You will pay 100 to 200 usually

Any Anschutz.Mine is the model 1416. Mine will shoot one hole 5 shot groups at 50 yards the diam. of a ciggarette butt. The Anschutz has the best lock time and trigger of any target rifle I've ever shot.

my latest pickup is a used savage 63...single shot bolt, manlichter style stock...gotta be 40+ years old but in really good condition...i will be refinishing the stock and re-bluing; expect it will be a nice simple rifle for friends (especially those who have never shot) to plink with...

Pulled my CZ452 out for the first time in a year last night. I have more expesnive .22lr but this is the one I like using - and unfortunately is much more accurate than I am off hand, then again maybe it was the ammuntion.

The other decision - which would you bet your life on - carry for survival??? CZ hands down. I was talking to a local gunsmith a while back - doesn't carry spares as they don't break (and thye have been on Oz for over 40 years). All he does is tune triggers on new ones.
If I had to walk across the country and survive it would be a CZ452 and a bick of ammo that i would take.

how is the triggger on the Marlin?

Marlin Golden 39A. Good enough for Annie Oakley...good enough for me.

I know it's not a bolt, but several people have shown and recommended the Marlin 39, so I vote for the Browning BL-22 lever action.

I don't know if it is made any more, but you should be able to find a used one. They are accurate and nicely made, and the best thing about the tube feed is that you can shoot any long rifle, short, or even the little CB caps (a 29 gr. bullet at around 725 fps) which are great for urban pest control, as they are almost silent. They will even cleanly kill a big raccoon at 20 yards with a brain shot.

Ive got an old jc higgins bolt action that's supposedly a marlin 80.
a marlin 70c

Hey dipbait, would you mind taking the cover plate off that westernfield, ive got one that i got in a trade and i need to put it back together, could you post up some pics or video that shows how to put it back together?

my latest acquisition is a winchester 67, a single shot bolt...not really a collectible, but a nice performing old winchester rimfire...gonna take my time refinishing the stock which is pretty worn...

...i have never found the appeal of the 10/22...it seems everyone buys them, take them apart to make them into something else; then get tired of them and sell/trade them off...

I've had a nylon 66 for about 20 years now, and it's still going strong.

The CMP is selling Kimber Model 82's for $600 (which is about half of what they cost new 15 yrs ago). The sights included are worth $150 alone. Mine will shoot one hole at 50 yds. They are brand new, never used rifles that were purchased for a Army marksmanship program that never got off the ground. These are rifles built when Jack Warne was still with the company, and the workmanship is beautiful. I have several other higher end .22's and this is the one I'll keep.
