Best 5-6" FB for under $100? I list specifics.

Josh,

This is the first time I have seen this post. I guess I did not read the original thread, or far enough down to see it.

I have not tried to badmouth Ted Frizzell or Mr. Gonzales out of business. I happen to like the MMHW knives very much and have said so. I have also said I did not think the looseness problem would matter with the larger knives. But we are here to discuss the merits as well as faults of various knives. I don't think there is anything wrong in a member stating that they have observed some problem with a particular brand of knife or sheath. And of course, the makers and sellers can always reply to these criticisms if they don't believe they are valid, as Mr. Gonzales has done.

I will admit that it is possible I misinterpreted what I have seen with the MMHW sheaths. I bought my Integral Guard Fighter second hand, so it could be that the original owner heated the kydex up to make the fit looser. I did not consider that possibility. When I saw the story about the guy who lost his knife, I assumed the looseness must be a common problem and the sheaths come like that or loosen up on their own.

It could also be that the looseness issue does not come up that much because most of the knives Ted Frizzell makes are large ones. If the blade is long enough then the knife is not going to bounce out no matter how loose the sheath is. My Integral Guard Fighter has a six and a half inch blade, and is not quite long enough that I would feel comfortable in wearing it in its current condition. If it were a ten inch bowie then it probably would not matter if the sheath was loose.

From what Mr. Gonzales has said, I have to say I still think the MMHW sheaths are unsatisfactory. If the vast majority of them are too tight, that isn't good, either. Then you get a situation where the knife is hard to remove from the sheath.

Perhaps the solution would be to put straps on the sheaths to fit around the handles of the knives. Then the kydex could be loose enough to make removing the knife easy, whereas the strap would prevent the knife from falling out.

I appreciate Mr. Gonzales' offer to replace the sheath. However, given what he has said about the tightness problem, I am reluctant to request another MMHW sheath.

WT-- I didn't bring up the post to accuse you of badmouthing MMHW--just wasn't sure if you'd seen it or not:). I haven't really had any problems with my MMHW sheath, but to be perfectly honest, I don't think the sheath is up to the same level of quality as the knife. Anyway, you'll never know if they can fix the problem to your satisfaction unless you let them try.

Hello Josh,

I was replying to Mr. Gonzales statements that you reproduced, concerning badmouthing Ted Frizzell out of business. Guess that wasn't clear since I addressed the message to you - sorry.

Also concerning Mr. Gonzales' statements, while I can't remember all of the posts I wrote concerning the MMHW sheaths, I doubt I made any comments about "cheap kydex". I try not to make any statements that are impolite or inflamatory. The kydex on my MMHW sheaths does look thinner to me than the kydex on other sheaths I own, and I was suspecting that was the reason they get loose. But then Mr. Gonzales says they won't get loose unless the kydex gets hot, and I don't know enough about kydex to argue with that.

SOG X42 !
I know, I know, zytel scales :)
But man, the STEEL ! BG42 , full tang, exposed at the hilt, with lanyard hole. Harder than the hubs o hell at RC 60-62.It also has the cryogenic heattreat. Fairly thin blade, .14 inch, almost flat ground, Great slicer , but I would'nt chop with it too much. It's my idea of a survival knife cause with that steel , sharpening won't be an issue for some time ..

The scales are fastened by hex head bolts , so they come off easy & would serve as patterns for any type of handle material you care to carve. How 'bout some of that magnesium firestarter stuff :)
I keep mine in my motorhome ,along with my ax, for the same reasons as you. I live in Golden, hehe. It's really quite a knife. I know this is a pretty old post. Would like to hear what you wind up with.

take a look at www.swamprat.com
look at their tests...look at their steel... Unconditional guaranty whatever how you break your knife (if you succed to break one)
If you can find better for the price please let me know!

That CQCB1 looks good to me, too, in fact it's been calling me.;) I'm gonna spring when a sale hits. The Yari won't fit your chopping needs without a baton, and maybe the CQCB won't either, but it stands a better chance.
Regarding the used kydex sheath from MMHW, W.T., I would have a hard time dissing them knowing how easy it is to both foul up and fix kydex. If I didn't have an iron and a wash cloth, I'd just take them up on a free one and be thankful they're willing to go above and beyond.
