Best 5" fixed knife for hard work without a convex edge

The best accessory for the original Sharpmaker is a can of scouring powder, I use Bon Amis, and a cellulose sponge. Keep those files, both grey and white, clean. Some steels will get less than ten swipes per side between cleanings. It will save you time.
I believe that the diamond files are more coarse than the grey ones, so they would make reprofiling quicker... I just keep cleaning my grey files.

If you're looking for something of a similar size & profile to the S1, stainless(ish), bevel edge, and absolutely bomb-proof, my recommendation would be to get a Koster Bushmaster in 3V. KSF have them at $205 (micarta handles) at the moment. There is a also a coupon code valid today that will get you a further $10 off (PM me), and you will get another $10 in points towards a future purchase. Less than $200 delivered for a 5" Koster knife with no wait is pretty much a steal in my book. But you'll have to move quick cos they won't last long.

:) Yes, and according to my opening post I don't prefer that method. Actually, the guy has ruined one of my knives. It was said it was easy to make a convex edge into a V edge, so I wondered how.

I understood you to say you don't want him doing regular sharpening for you. I had in mind having him reprofile your knife, to match your Sharpmaker's bevel. You could then maintain the edge yourself. But if he's wrecked one of your knives, don't give him more business.

If it was my problem I'd spend quality time with a bench stone.

But since you use a Sharpmaker, reprofile on that.

You might also consider buying a worksharp kts and keeping your S1. The wskts is fairly foolproof (read the threads here to get pointers & to avoid rounding the tip) and it gets knives at least factory sharp. Cheaper than buying a new knife if you already have one you like and you can use it on your other knives as well. At the very least, you could use it to quickly/easily reprofile so you can hit the edge with the sharpmaker easily. Using the sharpmaker at all isnt really necessary unless you want to use it while camping/away imo since it wont get the edge much better than the wskts without a lot of effort.

Thnx everyone. I'll try to reprofile on the Sharpmaker. I'm stubborn, though, so I just ordered the diamond rods ;).

And if it doesn't work, it 'll probably become the ESEE 5 or the Koster Bushmaster. Those are the ones that gets the best reviews, if I listen to the Internet correctly (although Beckers, Ontarios and some others also seem good value for money). Swamp RAT also is appealing, but they currently appear to make only one other model.

But hopefully that isn't necessary. Still love my Fallkniven :). Keep you posted when I've tried to reprofile it.

Kabar bk2 all the way. It's near indestructible.

Or you can pay almost 4 times more for an ESEE 5 which is also pretty sweet

Got my bk2 for $56 shipped and at that time the ESEE was $228. ESEE comes with a lifetime no questions asked guarantee. But it you can break 4 bk2's you need to rethink your methods. Haha.
Good luck finding you new chopper.

It sounds like the knife you want will be used pretty hard. I would not spend no $200+ on such a knife. The earlier suggestions of the $50 range sound better.

The sharpmaker diamond rods are excellent, excellent, excellent. Remember to use very light strokes when using them to reprofile. Using pressure on those diamond rods will not make them cut metal faster, but it might dislodge the diamonds from the nickel. Light strokes. :)

Get a bk2..... It's a tank of a knife and can well do anything you may want it for

Just wondering why no one mentiones the Bark River Bravo 1 or 2...

Well, perhaps because you asked for knives without a convex edge. Also they fall either side of your 5" desired blade length, although I think they are coming out with a Bravo 1.5 model sometime soon, which should fit the bill.

The Swamp Rat Ratmandue may fit your criteria also You may like the Becker BK2 which has risen to an incredible level of popularity.
