Best 7-6"ish camp/tactical knife for price

I like all of the BK&T knives, but for the limited use you're talking about, it would be hard to beat the Cold Steel Bushman, for a $20 bill.

If you are going on a weekend survival course, one thing that I surprised no one mentioned was the sheath system that comes with the knife. My first choice for a blade would be the Ontario RAT. Very nice design with a good performing blade. The fact that it comes with the most versatile and functional sheath seals the deal.

The swamp Rat sheath is great too. Very well made and the front pocket allow you to strap a Firestarter and other survival items in it. Great stuff...

Consider a Buck Nighthawk for your trip. It's
bulldog tough and will do anything you can imagine
(and few you can't) and come back for more.

The'hawk offers , price, a decent sheath (to start
with) good steel, and warranty no one can beat.
I've depended on mine more times than I can count
with not one complaint.

I vote for the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. A fantastic blade and handle and a very useful Kydex-lined nylon sheath.

Take it easy,
Bob Scott

On the camp/tactical side, the Nighthawk is killer.;) The BK7 is a little bigger, less suited for GP, but better at chopping. Neither has a great sheath, but as good as any of the others. I have both and recommend either. The RAT-7 is getting decent reviews as well. The Camp Tramp gets good reviews, but you could get all three of the others for about the same price as a Rat.

If you want a good slicer and a good chopper then you should check out Blackjack's Big Country Kampr. 8 blade and 3/16 thick, Aus6 or 8 steel. Great edge holding, costs little less than $100 but well worth it.

It's one thing to be a known rat homer, quite another to say Buck, Becker, and RAT aren't good knives. The thread title clearly shows he's looking for a good bargain. There's a big difference between most bang for the buck, and most buck for the bang.

Hi Stich,
I don't think you've read what I said... Do I say Buck BK&T and RAT are arent' good knife? NO
I say IF I have to choose a knife, specialy for something as serious as survival, I prefer invest a bit more money in a proven quality knife than buying a cheap medium quality knife.
I don't say Buck RAT and BK&T are BAD, but compared to Swamp Rat, they're medium, and that is a fact...
That said I personnaly own some very good Buck 110, Spydercos etc...

I don't think Oliver is off base. I think the point is that for something as critical as a "survival" situation, you buy the best your budget can afford, while understanding that "Mountain Men" "survived" with knives that were little more than butcher knives -- thin, wood handled, no guard, carbon steel.

I agree :D I've used a classic Ka-bar as survival knife for many years and I've never felt "under equiped" with this knife. The best survival knife is the one you got when the things go down.
What I tend to point is as you said, when you've tryed such great stuff like Swamp Rat's knives it's hard to go back on something else that is at least better.:)
