Best 7-8 inch Blade for Chopping

I'm a huge fan of the Basic 7 in this size range. Probably the lightest .25" thick knife with a 7" blade. It is an exceptionally great chopper for being so light. The weight (or lack of) makes it very easy to carry comfortably.

At 1/4" blade thickness and weighing 12 oz with Resiprene-C handle, the Basic 7 is lighter than, and arguably as strong as, anything else in the 7" blade range, long enough with enough forward balance for efficient chopping/batonning but not so long that point work is awkward, has the best of all Busse ergonomics IMO plus insulation from cold/vibration/electrical shock, and a standard asymmetrical edge grind which is one of the strongest, most efficient cutting edge geometries and the easiest to sharpen in the field…

If you like the Ergo handle, then consider the MoJo/Mofo blades. They are certainly under appreciated for their all around performance.

I agree, and I actually like the Euro-handle mojo/mofo’s better than the Ergo’s, a little longer @ 8.5” blade length, but this variant comes in at only around a pound—within an ounce of a Skinny ASH1…

Wow Will.. That is truly grail worthy. Any idea how many of those are floating around? Is the recurve completely gone? Do you know if an Ergo could be ground down to that shape? I've been thinking about getting my SHeLE or ZTSH bobbed and I think this picture sold me. Or I might have to find another to mod.

Thank you.

That was from a limited run of 45 "Muddy Mojos" (chocolate snake micarta on muddy blade finish) with serrations released a few years ago. I sent one in to Garth and asked him to grind off the thumb ramp on top of the spine and the exposed skullcrusher at the butt so the micarta is flush with the tang all the way around, and then asked him to grind that recurved edge in just above the serrations. He then re-ground the lower part of the blade so it wouldn't be too thick behind the edge, polished the spine and tang all the way around from point to choil, and voila. Has a great feel in hand and I think is a very handsome piece. The open-spine sheath is Buy Brown.

Those Muddy Mojo's come up on the Exchange from time-to-time, or of course you can have pretty much the same done to any Mojo/Mofo. This one is .22" thick, which I think is ideal.

Here's a pic sheathed...

SHE,NMSFNO or HHFSH are all excellent choices.
IMO the HHFSH feels & performs the best.

Perhaps the DSF? Designed as a military knife, but my recently aquired TMDSF feels like it has the needed forward weight to chop well. Have not had the chance to try it out in that respect, as I only received it last Saturday. And I may want to keep this one in pristine condition - for future sale/trading material. Always a tough call for me to purchase that unused Busse, and be reluctant to mar it up. Or wait for the same model, slightly used, for less money, that I can utilize. So I look for both...and you can never know what's coming down the pike! Cheers.
