i'm putting together four to six smaller messanger style bags, as "hand-outs" in the innevitable zombie apocalypse ;) and while they all have a good folder, a good multitool, a good flashlight etc etc i don't know what good chopper to go with.

needs to be no LONGER than 16" Blade, NON FLEXIBLE (no machetes, plz) made in the USA and under around $200

what do you guys think?

this isn't a pattern i have experience with (being in SoCal) but i was recently on a bit of a hike and needed some chopping power. i like to have a bog to toss at friends when they accompany me, and i don't want to get big TOPS Armageddons, Strider PABs or Busse Battle Mistress' that're going to get shelved until an unskilled user hits a rock with em. thats a waste TWO ways.

Thanks Guys!

KaBar/Becker BK9, maybe? Thats a big fave around here, especially for the money. In the $70 range, more or less.

I would look at Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. Great users, made by hand and in that price range.

I have several of his knives and like them all a lot!

his swords no longer appear to be available and i dont see anything (other than the SERE (METE?) that i think fits the bill.

i think i'll need to pick one of the larger ones up for myself though :p

How about a Kershaw Outcast? I don't have one but at about $80 bucks for a great big 10" blade of D2 it sounds like a heck of a deal to me. Looks like it would be a great chopper and I think I'm going to pick one up next knife buying binge.

MSRP is $130 (i love msrp, and will only pay it, and no less.) so this one is on my short list.

kinda hoping to find something more "knife like"? the Outcast is a bit thin. good chop, no smash. i like smash.

Negative on the USMC ka-bar, i dont need the shovel or crowbar aspects, and don't wanna give CutCo any money. not long enough either. can't clear brush with a kabar without royally fusking up your back......

"RC-10" seems most promising, but i'm SURE the price'll preclude it's use for this project.

Scrapyard..... are they super frickin difficult to come upon, like the other bussekin stuff? i'm not trying to snipe ebay for three months and pay double retail like everything else that family does.......

options thus far:
1.) Scrapyard Dog Father (this may be it....)
2.) Outcast (too thin?)
3.) BK 9 (the handle is hilariously uncomfortable)

more?

The Rat will probably be just under your price limit. You could go with the Becker and get the replacement micarta grips and still be well under your limit.

The Outcast is $60 some places, and its unkillable. Baton away. Great hunk of D2 at that price. Richard J is working on a regrind for me, I cant wait to get it back...stripped :)

oh inexplicably lame! i just discovered that the outcast is made in china now! when did this happen?!

now my options are
1.) scrapyard Dog Father
2.) Becker BK9
3.) RAT "RC-10" (if the price is acceptable)

i'm not seeing any listing for the micarta replacement slabs for the beckers, anyone got a part number?
