Best 9"+ Beater for the Buck

With all the conditions for approval, it pretty much kicks out all the value buys...I wouldnt consider any Busse the best "beater for the buck".

He already owns at least one Busse. ;)

I have 2 Tank Busters (Urban Shadow Camo, Black/Tan G10 and a Sage /Tan Canvas) and a 3rd Coming soon: Double Cut with Black/Tan G10 Swedge, Skull Crusher and Choil.

Also have 2 Bushwacker Mistresses on order. 2 Of my Tank Busters cost me more than than either of the BWM did. LOL

But yeah I feel your pain, I missed out on a few models over the years, bad timing on my part. :(

You're a lucky man Ankerson! i didnt know the Tank Buster was gonna be up on the site, i was looking for the previous one, the....st55? i dunno... but i got my mil-spec guy : Black with Black paper stds, rounded, no choil, with swedge, but after deciding i loved this thing for my ruckin around knife and handling it, i realized i need a satin/no choil/no swedge/OD G10 Mags one. now they are gone, and i am without. Le Sigh.

Becker BK9, ontario camp machete (I don't know why you automatically assume machetes have flex) RAT RC-10
the "traditional" (i guess) definition, with the flared blade and with plenty of flex is what i want to avoid. the Ontario SPxx machetes are actually good i suppose. but even Ontarios short "traditional" machetes do flex quite a bit.
i'm real anxious to get an RC10 in my hand, espacially if they don't tweak the design too much from the prototype. i DO really like that......

yea, i specifically said Busses wouldn't apply. i do like em though, just not for the purpose of this project. and all those "conditions" are really more like.... "Principles". which i like having. makes me feel all good when i go to sleep at night, knowing I'm at least fighting to keep some semblance of American Pride in this Blue-State, "Global Economy", weak-kneed world we're sadly starting to live in. as previously stated; American Jobs : i dig 'em.

and if it doesn't meet my criteria it isn't a bargain, its a compromise. and i find that in the knife industry "bargains" rarely are. if its CHEAP (not inexpensive) you usually pay for the penny saved twice over, when you get hurts by it or it breaks and you have to replace it. if its a REAL "Deal" than someone didn't get that extra bacon they could have or some retail store couldn't pay for their lights or staff.

sadly i own 4. it seems to have struck, and i don't imagine it's likely to get better without the liberal application of copious quantities of INFI.......

the Strider and Emerson bugs leave me pretty destitute come every SHOT show, and this year, with my recent INFI habit, i'll be living in a cardboard box for sure.......

thats why i'm trying to do the SEMI responsible thing by buying these "gimme" knives on a budget. normally i find the most expensive gorram thing i can and then ask for it all black and half serrated, just to be factitious :p

A Himalayan Imports "Pen Knife" would be perfect.

Or a HI "AK" or WW2" with a 12" - 15" OAL.

Blems and used can be got for around $50.

4 HUH? :D

There will be many more for you in the future.

All I buy now are Busses and Striders, one step inside the cardboard box myself. :)

If you are giving them away then I can understand not wanting to spend a lot of cash. ;)

I would just get some Rats and be done with it. :D

I haven't seen a recommendation for the Browning Crowell competition knife. It received wide acclaim when it was first released a couple of years ago. Not made American though.

Also consider the Fehrman's for something more equivalent to Busse but more easily tracked down.

Carbon V Cold Steel TM, Marbles Trailmaker, Scrapyard Dogfather for a pry bar of a knife. The KSF machete if you can find one is just a modified and shortened to 14" Ontario Machete.

Anybody mention Ranger Knives yet?
1095 steel, coated blades, cord-wrapped handles, less than $100, lifetime warranty, handmade tools of all descriptions.

Edit: matter of fact, I'm ordering a Ranger Shiv right now.

Hanwei Practical Gongfu Sword
Nice stiff blade, and one HELL of a chopping machine. :D:thumbup:

Whenever this sort of question comes up, I always recommend the KaBar Cutlass. It's called a "machete", but it's really more of a chopper. Non-flexible. Inexpensive. Tough as all-get-out. Comfortable to use, keeps an edge FOREVER, and hits almost as well as a Battle Mistress. I prefer the Cutlass over the Becker line, the steel isn't as beastly thick, and I like the slightly-squishy handle a lot. The blade design is excellent- with the sweet spot being right in the center of the widest part.

Mine doesn't look nearly as pretty as this anymore.

Why not a hatchet? Weren't they invented for chopping? Or perhaps a nice pole axe?

Right tool for the job, people. If you ever catch me chopping with a knife then you'll know I've either done some poor planning or that the SHTF somehow.

I always thought the handles on the Beckers to be too thick and ugly, but then I bought a BK7 to try out and it sure changed my mind. It's got good contours and it fits my hand perfectly.

I've never seen any posts about Outcasts breaking or even chipping for that matter. I have however seen pics of one of the new Becker/Kabar knives that had broken while batoning. Outcasts can be had for roughly $70-75 online, add (I haven't, just saying) $10-15 for full convex job and apparently they become real beasts. I think they get a bad rap because they're produced in China and they are made of D2. I'd love to see pics of one failing, because I don't think they exist.

I'd be interested in knowing who would convex a knife that large for that price. I would like a convexed Outcasts. Lots of good suggestions out there not sure how the OP feels about them but I found this thread a good read.

Becker BK9 with the optional micarta scales. Get them at Tomars.

I think the Becker BK9 with micarta scales is probably the best bet/value for the $, but what about the Ranger Knives RD9? It's now made by Ontario, but I thought it's U.S. made & with 5160 steel & micarta scales.

I've an Outcast (Don't know where it was made), but I just didn't care for it, but on paper, it sure seems like a great deal.

I'm with kgd,I love my Browning comp cutter especially since it was right around $100. I still am amazed with the performance as well as the fit and finish.
