Best All Around Fixed Blade?

I'd recommend a Busse Steal Heart-E. It's the last camping/survival knife you will ever need to buy in your life, unless you lose it.

A Randal #5 with a 01 carbon 6" blade and all brass fittings with brass and black spacers, handle material and style of your choice.

I got a Dozier Wilderness about 6 months ago...5" of .20 thick Dozier sharp D2..OAL 9 7/8"...the finest fixed blade I've ever held in my hand.

I like my combo edge Next Generation KaBar for camp work. If you need to chop a lot, the other knives like the Battle Mistress or a kukri will do, but if you're not cutting tent stakes all the time, the KaBar is fine. I have used it to hack through branches to save a friend's snagged fishing lure before. The serrated edge comes in useful, and the sharpened false edge makes the point excellent for fine work (like removing splinters).
There are better knives, but I don't mind beating on the KaBar. I trust it, and it does the job. The handle's got a nice sure grip, and I love the beadblast finish.
I'm sure I'll change my mind when my Battle Mistress arrives!

"I have read that INFI, the proprietary steel used by Busse, has corrosion-resistant properties similar to ATS-34.
I would like to see this confirmed by someone other than Busse. "

I'm not sure how I can "confirm" this, but I can tell you that my Busse knives have shown no sign of rust, while a couple of my Swamp Rats have had very slight rusting on the edges.

SR101 is said to be a close relative of 52100, which is most certainly not stainless. The Swamp Rat will require a bit of maintenance, but it should be a big deal on a user type knife.

The rust on my Swamp Rats' edges has not been a big deal at all. I could have prevented it if I'd washed the sap off the blades; it was just the tiniest amount; and it came right off with regular chopping and stropping.

Randall model 5. 5 inch blade.
What you are looking for is pretty
much what it was designed to do.

Guess it also depends on your state laws and how long a knife you can carry. For the money, and if you can find one, I suggest a Marbles, One-Zero. They never went over well as collectors but are excellent knives and hold up well. If thats too large I'd suggest BM Nimravus in the full size model (one of my favorites).

Damn I love my Strider SA... just had to work that in there... I recently set out to find a nice inexpensive fixed blade for a friend of mine who was to be on a boat for the next 3 months... I WAS looking for something to be h2o friendly, so I ended the search with a Benchmade River knife... for $50! 440c steel, but it cut well and I would think it would be a fine edc... As a matter of fact I had planned to DEFINATELY pick one up for myself... until I "discovered" the Strider SA. Bitchin' tool. Falknivens are GREAT for the price... I just don't care for rubber handles. One thing about Strider... their warranty is unbeatable. You break it, we fix it. After the SA, there will be more Striders in my future.
