Best all around real pocket knife benchmade 940 or spyderco pm2???

It's like ford vs Chevy. I was in this boat last year. I went to stores and held both. The 940 just was weird feeling. The paramilitary 2 fit my hand like they used my hand to make the knife too. Now I don't think I'd buy another benchmade unless it had a much thinner full flat grind blade in some ridiculous high vanadium tool steel.

The PM2 doesn’t fit my big hands. Loved my 940 since day one. More neutral handle. Lightweight. Almost disappears in the pocket.
They both take a back seat to the GB2. But that’s just me.

I like the lock design and how slicey the PM2 is, but I tend not to carry it as my primary knife due to concerns on the strength of tip. The 940 got a fair bit of pocket time earlier in my knife collecting, and I think it is still a great EDC. I have carried and used a lot of Axis lock knives without any spring breakage, but I understand the concern.

Honestly, if you are ok with a bit more deliberate closing effort, the Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2 is a heck of a knife in the same price range. The hollow grind makes it very slicey, but the M4 steel and overall design carries a lot more strength to the tip than PM2. It isn't stainless, and some folks don't like the liner lock, but it is definitely a knife I trust as a solo EDC.
I don't trust liner locks. Except for my GB2. Great knife.

I really dislike the ergonomics of the PM2, and most Spydercos with a similar “hump”. I’m also unashamedly a Benchmade fan, so this is a no-brainer for me.
There’s a reason both knives are classics, but imo, the 940 can’t be beat.

At the prices these days?!

A CRK, Hinderer or a Spartan might be something to consider.

[For the record, my BM's are 'good' and my PM2 is perfection. I just like the other brands, more. No offense to anyone²!]

PM2 is not a liner lock. It’s a compression lock. Totally different lockup method, and stronger than a liner lock.
Yes. I've had my PM2 for 10 years without the lock bar moving a millimeter. Superior design to axis and liner locks.

I will take Spyderco all day over Benchmade. Also, I think the Kapara is a more direct competitor to the 940, and it's quite excellent, though not available in the wide variety of steels the PM2 is.

Your hands must be truly enormous! Mine are bigger than average, and if I use the forward choil, I have an inch of handle sticking out below my mitt.

As a Portsider: the Axis-Lock appeals for it's truly ambidextrous design. I was lucky to find a Southpaw PM2...

I quit buying PM2’s and 3’s after breaking a few tips off. No, not every tip broke, but enough did for the tasks I perform to move me away. They make great scalpels and certainly slice well! That’s been my experience with a few and as such they’re just collectibles to me. I’d go with any number of Benchmade designs over a PM2 if it were for using. I’ve damaged BM’s as well, but those were well deserved breaks.

I might have the biggest hands on BF and the PM2 looks cartoonishly small when I'm holding it!
