So I got a RMD to give to my nephew for his college graduation. I want to include a sheath as well, but I don't want to spend too much money. He's only my nephew for god's sake. :) He's a big time backpacker/hiker....what do you think would be the best set up for him? Thanks for the input!!!

azwelke is making a pancake sheath for mine. I think it will be very versatile, and has a thin profile.

I'm usually a leather guy. I figured I'd go different. It's also cheaper than leather.

I have his foldover Kydex for my Rats....he does good work. I was thinking about the pancake style and a tek-lok clip maybe. I just think there may be a better option though for a dedicated hiker/backpacker.

I would agree, azwelke makes a great fitting, good looking sheath with Tec/Loc for about 40.00. I got one for my HRLM also that was just as nice. I am sure there are other great makers here as well however, I have experience with AL and he is a great guy to do business with.

I hate tek-lok's. There is just something about them. I wish there was a better attachment method with kydex.

I have an OD sheath for a Squatch I got on the XC. It comes a'danglin. It's a bigger knife so that works well, but it's AWESOME! A "belt" of nylon webbing with a loop attached to it. Sewn to 2 of the rivet holes just to keep it in place (altho gravity alone would do that). I like it.

I think I have a Bladetech IWB loop for a few sheaths. That works well but the sheath winds up going behind the belt. Not terrible, not perfect. I think I need that Back To The Future hover-board technology and have the sucker just floating near my waist. LOL

I'm pretty sure I have the perfect RMD setup, just sayin.....

Steelnut kydex and ESEE molle.

Do you know how he likes to carry a fixed blade when backpacking?

I know for me when I am backpacking I like my knife on my shoulder hardness webbing sitting on my chest. What I have found works best for this is a taco style kydex with a small or large tek lok. You can take it on and off very quick and its out of the way. Unsheathing is a simple pull or flick of thumb. Its minimal and not bulky which is one thing that may matter to him being a backpacker. Something like this. (not my pic)

That is a pretty nice setup. I may look into this option. Thanks.
Al has the measurements for kydex to fit the ESEE molle-back stuff - he made one for my HRLM (my RMD rides in a SpecOps sheath), and it is perfect! I don't think I can post the pics, but you can e-mail him about it or I can forward a copy of the pics I sent him when I got the sheath.
From my own backpacking experience, I prefer my knife to attach on my thigh (dangle) so it doesn't get in the way of my pack-belt or straps when loading up or unloading.

Well, that's one of the challenges I'm having. I'm not even sure he carries a fixed blade. I don't want to ask too many questions and then spoil the surprise. Thanks for letting me know what works well for you. I appreciate it.

I am with Nate, I carry my RMD while I hike and backpack and I use a David Brown Taco Kydex with a tec-lok mounted vertically on my shoulder strap. Knife stays nicely out of the way and is easily accessible. Also, it is not super obvious so it keeps the Sheeple happy.

Alex

P.S. My Buy Brown RMD sheath is the BEST fitting piece of Kydex I have ever seen.

I still have a thing, even if a bit more expensive, for Armoralleather low-ride sheaths. Dwayne Puckett has that lil' bit all taken care of!!

I have a chuddy bear leather. I prefer leather to kydex sheaths, for smaller blades anyways.

Scrapyard sells aftermarket Cordura sheaths that are Molle compatable for extremely reasonable prices. I believe one of them fits 6 inch knives.
