i would like to know what you guys thuoght the best all metal folder for under/ around 60-70 dollars
toughness is top priority

How big a blade?

What style of blade?

How do you want to use the knife?
SD? Skinning? EDC? Open cans? General camping? ???

single hand open?

want pocket clip?

Do you have a problem with "made in China"?
" ' " " " "made in Taiwan?"

More data means better answers.

Have to agree with knarfeng, more info= better, more in depth answer.

Plus you did not specify that you had to agree or like the answer.

And get used to the same answer, what you did specify (toughness) and

price range (60.00-70.00 USD). Spyderco is the most logical choice. Quality

of materials, edge holding ability, ergonomics, durability, etc..etc...

Oh yeah, I own about sixty plus knives both custom and production, And I

still usually carry a spyder for utility or SD.

sorry, heres more in depth criteria:
<3.75 in blade
tanto, Drop, clip, not spear
i want it for everything from opening boxes to worst case scenario survival
not spring assist one hand open
needs a pocket clip
beefy handle, no flex
almost any lock but friction

Your price range makes it difficult for a quality all metal knife. But I have a couple that I have been very impressed with (I own them both). The blade lengths are a little shorter but for the price you want to pay, I don't know of any others that also have some quality. I'd much rather have a little smaller knife with a good design, good steel, and good F&F than a larger knife with less quality. That's just my opinion but I suspect many other would agree. I also like the Spyderco's recommended but they are not the only "game in town".

I just bought one of these. All metal, Bob Dozier design, D2 steel. Great little knife for the price. I paid about $60 on Ebay.

The Mcusta MC-41. Very well made. All metal, tanto, good steel (VG-10). On special at Japanese Knife Direct for less than $80. Great people to work with. Their service and dedication to customer satisfaction is second to none.

There is also the Kershaw Boa in S60V and the Kershaw Blur in S30V. You can find those easy so I didn't bother with pictures.

Too bad you can't come up with a little more. The BM Presidio is built like a take. I have the auto version and just love it. Here's some good prices just in case you change your mind.

Thank you for being so helpful bladeprince.

just wondering, whats your opinion about CRKT 14k summit series?
i managed to find a Mt ranier thats still AUS6 but its a combo edge and i would kind of prefer straightedge. it was the last one in the store.
if they are good would you know were to get one thats still aus6?

also, does the MCusta come in less loud colors? and how about the VG-10 or VG-10 clad (San Mai) Tanto blades? is that good steel?

thanks for the help

Camillus CUDA EDC? There was version with 154CM for around $50.
Newer version had AUS-8 and went for $25.

Also probably not what you want (as it is owned by Spyderco) but still worth mentioning - Byrd - e.g. Cara Cara (under $20)

AUS-6M is like butter. IMO, stay away from it. It's even worse than 440A. It has it's place in the knife world but I don't buy it. I also don't buy any AUS-8 knives anymore. I think it's even too soft.

Mcusta comes in some great colors and materials but the aluminum handles all have those color bars.

Yes VG-10 it very good steel. Holds a good edge and you can make it razor sharp. It's not the best but far superior to AUS-6 or 8. The San Mai is OK but I prefer the all VG-10. Cheaper, scratches less easily, and not really needed in a knife. I's for looks, as far as I'm concerned.

Has you instructor told you about the new Spyderco P'kal knife that is coming out sometime in early 2007. It's a waved knife especially designed for Pakal. You may wait for one or at least get one when it comes our. I'm definitely picking one up. I use Pakal in my "homegrown" style, along with other techniques I've learned. They are a little expensive but I think worth it. Here is a picture from one website but you can't buy it yet. Made with S30V. Many think that's the top steel at the present. At least in the top 3. I sure like it. Stays sharp forever.

I also must add that I don't know why you are hung up on getting an all metal knife. They are slippery, especially if wet with anything like sweat or blood. I have a few aluminum knives but I made it a point to only buy ones with a very aggressive handle for a good grip (i.e. BM 5000 auto). I would recommend G-10, FRN, or Micarta. All are very tough and give a better grip than any metal. It will also open up a much wider selection.

Trying looking up some info on a Benchmade Mini-Skirmish. It's a titanium framelock with s-30V steel which is among the best knife steels....

Kershaw Storm II (slightly larger than the Storm I) is an all-steel framelock with a deeply recurved 3 5/8" clip point blade in 12C27. No worry about grip slipping on this with its shaped handle and grip inserts. Opens by dual thumbstuds or a small-but-effective flipper. Works in direct and reversed grip. About $35.

Timberline Special Service folder if you want a tanto. They can be had in your price range on-line.

I agree with the others about the quality of Spyderco, but I also understand that we all have different wants and needs.
