Best all purpose knife under $50?

I was told to get a spear point for an all purpose blade though.

I wouldn't. Glad you joined the forum though, because you'll learn all sorts of fun stuff here!

With your price range, I'd go with a Buck Vantage Select, and take the rest to get a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife.

I was looking at the Kershaw Cryo II and the clash. I was told to get a spear point for an all purpose blade though. I just want the strongest multi purpose design. I currently have a crappy Ozark Trails knife from Walmart. I'm not a knife expert so I don't know what my current knife's blade type is. Thanks! Also, I will carry this with me every day. The knife can be more than $50 if I can find it on eBay for less than $50.

You can find Spyderco Delicas for around $50. A Benchmade mini Griptilian can be bought for $70. Both are great knives. Kershaw skylines are great. Most kershaws are awesome! :)

You might be able to find the vantage for 30-35 as well as a swiss classic for 15 ish. That's a decent option but how are you going to open your beers?!

Ah, sorry. I didn't mean multi-purpose as in a swiss army knife. I meant a knife that is good for hacking, cutting, slicing, and maybe a bit of piercing. The Spyderco knives just look to weird for me. So to clear it up, I am looking for a blade as I defined above that is more than 3 inches long, has no serration, is either a drop point or a spear point, and one that feels good in your hand.

Did anyone mention the Kershaw Blur yet?
Also, you don't specify - need it be folding? If not, I'd go with a Becker BK24. If you must open your beers make it a BK11.

Well, I seem to keep forgetting things. Yes, it should be a foldable knife unless anyone knows if I can open carry a 3+ inch blade in Springfield Oregon.

Thank you Ken. Well done btw.

I have a Buck Vantage and like it. I carry the Thermite and love it. You should, if possible, try all candidates before you buy. A gun/knife show, like OKCA in Eugene in April, would be a great place if you can wait that long. Once in your hand you can see how you like/dislike it and once you made a decision on which knife you can find one with the fewest flaws, best fit and finish, best price and best other stuff that you want from a purchase like service/warranty/proximity and such.

I heavily dislike the Buck Vantage. If someone hadn't stolen it, I would have given it to you for free as long as you don't sue me for the regular lock failures. The liner is terribly thought out. It's too thin and protrudes out beyond the grips making hard cuts uncomfortable, and leaving the liner to accidental disengagement with torsional force.

I'm very hard on knives, but I've had Chinese knives hold up better than my Vantage Force Pro under hard use. I had the same bad experience with an old Buck Strider, and I'm not the only one who has moved away from the brand because of these issues.

Between my Cryo II and SAK Pioneer, I'd recommend the SAK. I love my Cryo II, but my Pioneer does more than the Cryo can pretty much all the time. That awl gets used in so many ways while allowing me to use the main blade for strictly slicing. I like that the awl placement is at the end instead of out the middle of the back like in other SAK models. I got lucky and found my Pioneer for $19 on fleabay. My Cryo II for 39.95+ shipping on cabelas.

Hm. I'll look at the Thermite. Finding my first good knife is like making a life and death decision :|

LOL :)

I've been attracted by Henderer design for years. His own knives are above my pay grade. When Kershaw began work with him I was all ears. The 561 is one of the finest production knives in my neck of the woods. The Thermite is a gift with my name on it. Come to the Kershaw factory sale the week after Thanksgiving, check out their product line, talk with top executives, designers and production staff and get some at bargain prices. See you there.

Don't do any of that with a folder. That's work for a fixed blade. If you really want that in a folder Cold Steel has some options for you. How often are you out hacking, cutting, slicing, and piercing? You're worrying me a bit.

Here are two options that are fun, "Bang for buck" and effective. My No. 1 would have to be the Ripple!

What makes them fun? They are flippers. They flip really nice too.

Bang for buck? Yup! Both are a steal at under $50... basically these things are much better than $50.

Effective? Definitley.... I use abuse the shit out of my Skyline and I play (flip 1000s of times) with my Ripple a lot.

Ha. Sorry for making you worry, Yo Mama. I meant cut twigs, hacking at trees, and I don't know what I could pierce. I ended up getting a Kershaw Thermite so I would have enough money left for a decent sharpening kit.

One company, three different knives.

KERSHAW

1. Cryo 2
2. Thermite
3. Volt SS

I just bought a cryo 2 and absolutely love it, like it more than my Spyderco Paramilitary 2, I will own all 3 of the knives I mentioned eventually. Kershaw has become my favorite knife company.
