Let's get this out of the way first; I don't want an iPhone.

My contract is up, so it's time I can get a new phone for free/cheap. I can stick with AT&T, go back to Verizon, or switch to Sprint where apparently I can get a 17% discount on service. Provider aside, which company makes the best Android phone? Most reliable (doesn't crash), best features for the money, and best with updating software, etc. I have a Sony Ericsson, and I definitely don't want another. Android 2.3.5 was out before I could even get the update from 1.6 to 2.1, and I can't update it past 2.1. Plus my phone (factory refurbish) is starting to occasionally crash, just like the previous one started doing until it completely died. So to hell with Sony Ericsson.

Most of the phones I'm looking at are HTC, Motorola, or Samsung. What are peoples' opinions on these brands? Positive and negative. Any problems with a brand with a specific carrier?

Thanks.

HTC, They seem to have the most variety. I have no heard favorable things about Motorola Droid phone. Sansung also makes very good phones.

I've been extremely happy with my Motorola Droid X, and will be looking for another Motorola phone when I'm up for an upgrade next year. The new Bionic is supposed to be pretty good.., it's the one I'd be looking at if I didn't have to wait till next year.

As you are aware, most android devices have their mfrs' "spin"l on android. HTC's seems to be more popular than Samsung's. Also, Samsung seems to be perennially behind the curve in catching up to the latest android version. Dont hear that complaint as often with the othe mfrs. Hardware wise, i think they are all pretty solid. I had an HTC Evo for a while and it was a beautiful piece mechanically.

Ive been a Sprint customer forever and have no complaints. With their data plan, theres no reason not to go with them. The one drawback is they have fewer phone choices than others.

HTC's are pretty good. Ive got the Wildfire S myself and ive been very happy with it. Theyve got a lot of models to choose from, so youre bound to find one that suits your needs and budget.

HTC, though I have a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 which is cheaper and I have never had any issues. Either would be a great choice.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, and I'm very happy with it. The Galaxy Nexus (manufactured by Samsung for Google) comes out in November, looks like it's going to be a killer phone.

i can say the same but it took 3 phones to get there. i am with verizon and i think they had sent me a few refurbs before i got a brand new one. to check and see if its not a refurb, pop the back off and there wll be a manufacture date on a sticker. if you do not have that sticker its a refurb.

Let me guess, you have the Xperia X8? Absolutely hate mine as well.

I'd recommend HTC as well, my Sister's HTC Desire HD makes my X8 look like a child's toy.

I'm partial to the HTC phones. I have an Incredible 2 and my wife has an Motorola Droid 2 and the HTC is a far superior phone. The battery life on the Motorola is sub par.

anyone have an opinion on Virgin Mobile as a carrier? i might jump from verizon and virgin has way better plans...

X10. X10a to be exact, being the AT&T version, which only allows AT&T updates, which is why it's stuck at 2.1 while other X10s can update to 2.3.3 Apparently I can flash the rom and remove the AT&T proprietary software which'll allow updates from Sony.

That is what I have, the battery lasts me close to a full 4 days with moderate use, heavy use will take about 2.5 days. Love that thing.

well i do cell phone repair for a living so i have played with just about every android phone there is and in my honest opinion
HTC is the best all around they were the first to put android on a phone and the first to put windows on a phone dont get me wrong they have had a few lemons i also like Motorola i still use a droid 1 as i can over clock it to be as fast as any phone on the market today

HTC and Samsung are up there as the best 2 in my opinion. I've got a samsung galaxy s on at&t that has served perfectly for me. extremely thin too, and carbon fiber on the battery cover.

HTC's Sense version is the most user friendly version of android, and adds some features the basic android os lacks. I also think that HTC makes a well designed and durable product. Pick up a samsung phone, and then an HTC phone, there is a huge weight difference. Samsung and some other phones "feel" cheap. Feel isn't everything though. I personally have had bad luck with samsung smartphones, and it seems that their quality control is poor.
I've got no opinions on Motorola, because I have never owned one.

I would recommend Sprint if you plan on using a lot of data, they do have a great unlimited plan. Also, if you don't like a phone you can take it back for a full refund within 15 days I think.

Cheers.

i like HTC. I had a Samsung and the screen broke and splintered less than a month after I got it so i went back to my htc.

I've only had one 'smart phone' & it's an HTC.I don't have anything else to compare it with, but it works fine for me.Very few force closes/crashes.
