get an ak.
okay, someone had to say it
i don't have any since i'm an ar-15 guy. for $800 or so you can get a good, solid one. save the rest for ammo...you'll need a lot to really test it out. even the "tier 1" brands puts out a dud now and again. don't trust the rifle until it has at least 1k rounds down range.
cliff notes: look for m4 feed ramps, 14.5" chrome-lined barrel (the permanently attached muzzle device will bring it up to the legal minimum 16"), flat-top upper (the carry handle is removable). that's the most generic configuration and so long as nothing is wrong with those from the factory, every other part is easily interchangeable/fixable by you and you'll more than likely change the accessories as you learn more.
everyone already covered the brands so i'll recommend picking up magpul's carbine dvd's as part of your research/learning.

p.s. save your spent brass shell and send them to me
edit: start lurking on arfcom but here's a tip - don't listen to guys who's brass deflector on their rifles is still black/no scuff marks from the shells. chances are high they spend more of their time cleaning the damn rifle instead of shooting it.
