Best bang for the buck folding saw?

Hard to go wrong with the Fiskars / Gerber sliding saw. You can get them with either a wood (coarse teeth) or bone (fine teeth) saw blade. They lock open and closed with a dial. Cutting ability is fast and efficient. Only 3 ounces and 8" closed. Made in Finland. Costs around $8 each.

one can fashion a very useable colapsing bucksaw for $5 that will be able to take on some very sizeable wood. i use one regularly. i just cut logs ranging from 4'' to 8'' in diameter with mine, no problem. plus it is easy to repair in the field as long as you have a knife.

The really nifty thing about the pocket chain saw is that it isn't limited to cutting in a straight line. When cutting a small branch - maybe 4" across, it will cut three sides at the same time, making for some REALLY fast cutting action.

If you've never used one I highly recommend trying it out.

One caution though ... as with any saw you'll need to be careful not to get it pinched in a "drooping" cut. As the weight of the branch comes down on the blade, it can get badly stuck. The first time I used my pocket chain saw I made the mistake of cutting from the bottom up - because it was easiest. Big mistake.

When first using it I thought it might be hard to get it started - that the blade might have a tendency to flip on its side, but that wasn't the case. It was really pretty easy.

Another consideration:

Here is the "original" Pocket Chain Saw with metal loops on the ends - not very comfortable: http://www.pocketchainsaw.com/

Here is the Unbelievable Saw made by the same folks (Supreme Products). Rather than having just loops at the end this saw has very comfortable plastic handles: http://www.unbelievablesaw.com/
