Best bang for the buck?

Pocketable is a word now! Lol.

I didn't know what I was even looking at then! It was two years ago and I wasn't in to knives at that point. Wish I could have bought all of them though!

Tinkers are awesome! I had one for almost 30 years and now my son has it. A short time ago I found a guy that had two used ones for dirt cheap so I bought them and when I received them, they were like new and I couldnt be happier! I do wish they would have kept them smaller like the old ones!

SOME Tinkers? Should have grabbed the lot and spread the joy at that price.

Good deal on a good knife. My son has one and it is very pocketable (is that a word?).

Pocketable is a word. :)

In my estimation, the Tinker should have been called the Classic instead of the 58mm version (both deserve the term, actually). As a simple pocketknife for everyday carry, I consider it best of breed. Together with a Classic, or better yet Rambler, the two make a great pair with the keychainer supplementing the larger SAK. I could go through life with just those two.

On the other hand, who do I think I'm kidding? :playful:

Yep, I use a Rambler as a keychain and have use it plenty. A very handy tool and way better then just the Classic!

They DO still make the smaller 84mm version. They're certainly not as common, but you can find them online.

 +1. As Father Flanagan used to say, there's no such thing as a bad Victorinox. OTOH, although the Recruit is okay, it is not the top "bang for the buck" SAK. That distinction belongs to either the Spartan or Tinker, a choice depending on whether you spend more time drinking or screwing.

There is no awl on the Recruit, which ditches it for me right there. Also, the Tinker ph driver works better in general than the small fh on the can opener, which is especially useless when the screws are countersunk. However, if you really need to pull a cork when a dedicated corkscrew in unavailable, the Spartan's is a lot more elegant solution than punching it into the bottle.

So, for two more implements in the same package at the same price, we have two clear choices for best in category. I like the Tinker.

Drinking and screwing is my every weekend fun but Recruit is still my EDC for last eight years :)

I got a Coleman that wasn't too expensive and does everything my higher quality ones do. You can find it at your local department store too.

I have nothing against drinking and screwing. But I'm a beer and whiskey man and never drink wine. Can't stand the stuff. A recruit fits me just fine as well! The recruit handles slicing limes for cold Corona's or gin and tonics just fine. Opens fine beers as well. What can I say, I'm easy to please.

Victorinox and Mora get my vote. I ran through a dozen or so Vic SAK models that last few months and have gravitated to the corkscrew models on the Vic's. Even if you don't drink wine, that corkscrew is an excellent knot untangler/detangler and can hold the mini-screwdriver. The Ranger Plus is in my pocket most weekends and the Tourist gets the nod on weekdays although I'll carry a Buck 303 Cadet most days into the office. Buck is right up there too and would pick them over Case but I think Victorinox has them both beat in the folder category.

+1 for Mora & Victorinox

A Mora Clipper and a Vic Trekker, it's a really affordable and effective woods combo.

Yeah, I am sure they are still around but probably cant find one or two for what I paid for the bigger ones! I am also thinking about going back to a SAK Explorer and giving up the Tinker!

A Mora and Victorinox are my camping favourites and I add an Opinel for food processing.

The Explorer is nice, I started this week with an Explorer. I particularly like the way the philips screw driver is implemented.
