Unfortunately, I'm not military, but as far as I'm concerned if you're down to a knife in modern military combat something is going seriously wrong and you have your enemy pretty close to you (I'm talking less than arms length here - a distance at which most military self defense systems start working). A short blade (trailing or clip point tweener?) might be pretty good for this.
But generally, you might want to avoid that, it's far more likely that you need to pry open doors and crates, cut ropes, chop off some 2x4s, or hack through power lines than actually having to defend yourself. So, a drop point tweener, a BK-11 or, if you don't mind the weight, a BK-2. Weight seems to be an issue with all the crap our guys have to carry these days.
The first tour in Iraq I had a Machax, my second tour a BK10.
Any interesting stories of using your Machax over there?
Doc
i was thinking of starting a similar thread so glad this popped up. I'm going to take my bk2 to afghanistan. i was thinking if there was anything i can do to improve this knife for military purposes specifically maybe reprofile the top front of the blade to more closely resemble the bk7? anyone do anything like this? other than that i think this knife is perfect for me. i know i could get a bk7 but i like the shorter blade. i already have the micarta scales and a good sheath so not much else to do to improve this knife i would think.
I will be enlisting soon, and that is why i brought up this thread. Im having trouble choosig as between my BK-7 and BK-2 i am very comforatable using both, and no there limitaions for the most part. But i will have to choose when the time comes. Also, in regards to you saying this "maybe reprofile the top front of the blade to more closely resemble the bk7?" If you could get your hands on a BK-10 crewman you would be set. its going to cost you though.
