Best Big Folders? >5"

Get a Camillus Cuda Maxx and have Dirk convert it to tip-up carry for you. It'll "wave" out of your pocket like lightening! (By catching the wing on the corner of your pocket as you draw.) Dirk does great work and adds a few extra custom touches and he's cheap too. Look up my post about him in GB&U.

Forget the ones with the robo-assist, in my opinion. I think they're all faster without them.

I've owned a couple Rekat SIFUs. I liked everything about them EXCEPT the roll-lock. I think that lock is an awful thing and imparts too much resistance to the blade upon opening which makes it hard to flick open.

Cold Steel makes several lockbacks that are 5"-6". They have plastic handles but can be had for less than about $60 I think.

SOG makes a cool knife called the Pentagon Elite II. The only thing I don't like about that one is the Zytel handles and delicate pocket clip, but it's definately worth checking out.

Can you tell I like big folders too? ;) I've checked out and carried quite a few, but once I learned about the tip-up "wave" trick on the Maxxes I stopped looking.

I think all of the advice towards the Camillus Madd Max is worth following.
I have a couple of Rekat Sifu, and a Madd Maxx Bowie. The Maxx is a far better user knife. Mine gets used extensively and is up to all of the tasks!

Well, I done did it. I spoke to darrel ralph and ordered a 5.5" Max dagger. The 7" was really tempting, but the "smaller' seemed big enough, for now.
I do have a big Bud Weston framelock in 440V (I forgot the name) which really grew on me, but thanks to you guys I think the Ralph will take its place :)

Excellent! The dagger blade is definately the coolest.

You should have him drill the handle so you can move the clip tip-up/tip-down as you wish. You'll be glad you did. ;)

I did ask him to give me both tip up and tip down options. he strongly advises against tip up carry for the dagger, but I'm a dedicated tip up guy. Still, I agree having the choice is great :D

Darrel is a great guy. I only have the 4" dagger Maxx, but it's a purty one...
I have a Cuda Maxx stiletto as well. I never got around to converting either to tip-up, although Darrel's only requires the use of a T6 torx driver. I don't want to cover up the pearl inlays. It's my "gent's knife".
I still NEED to get a trident blade 7" Maxx and his Aftermath, one of these days... his knives are so well made, you never want to stop playing with them :)
edit, if he is making a 12" Maxx, I'm going to wait for the trident version.

WOW BurkStar...............looks like I'm in the same boat as mongo!! :D

Just now saw the picture of the Hinderer HellFire. Two in one sitting ;) :)

I forgot, Darrel has a 5.5" version of the AXD planned!

The 12" Maxx will be available in a several blade styles. He wants the 12" to influenced by the Maxx. You might be seeing persian style blades, maybe some of the more extreme Navajas. If you want a 12" and have an idea, run it by him. There is a good chance he will be able to do it.

I like that big Hinderer! I handled one of the big ones at Blade. KEWL!

Fulloflead - thank you for the kind words!

You've got to hold the "Groucho" to really appreciate how massive that thing is AND how smoothly it opens. It is so well balanced and designed that it takes absolutely no effort to open it up. Whats somewhat humorous is that its got a pocket clip on it. Even though I can and do carry a DDR Maxx (thanks Dirk, thats your Maxx in my picture :) )with no problem, there is no way that the Groucho can be carried in a normal pocket. As a matter of fact I'm talking to Dave (Lifter) right now about a sheath for it. Just waiting to be able to afford an entire cowhide to be able to cover it

You know, there IS a TnT with a 5 1/4" blade out there, I handled it at Blade-Art, it's practically a sword... :)
