Best blade for reverse grip?

I'm with you -- I actually find the Perrin awkward and uncomfortably in all grips.

The Camillus Mad Maxx does feel good in pakal ... standard reverse-hourglass dagger handle. Not only that, but the flippers act like an Emerson wave. That is, if you carry the knife in your pocket (clip does not accomodate this, so it will just have to be at the bottom of your pocket) tip-up with blade side forward, as you withdraw the knife the flipper will catch and the knife will open. A slight shift, close your hand, you're in pakal. Again, at 5.5", the Maxx has a bigger blade than many pakal advocates are comfortable with. I'm happy at the moment with the bigger blade, and carry the Maxx this way.

Day in and day out, though, it's the 710, which is smaller and easier to carry, and has a clip position which accomodates edge-up blade-forward in the pocket.

Oh no, it wasn't my intention to sound unappreciative, but I've handled the FP and it just doesn't feel secure, I kind of get the feeling that I'll lose my grip from a hard stab because of the finger choil. The Hornet has the same problem as the Gunting and the Polkowski Companion, IMHO - the handle is uneven on the palm side when held in reverse with the edge towards you, and that makes for a type of grip that I just don't like.

If I can get my hands on a custom Floro with a hollow or flat grind, that would be great! I gather it's somewhat like the Dave Beck/Tom Brown Tracker, only it had best be lighter and better balanced so as to be adequate as a fighter.

For the time being though, it seems like the 710 will be my next purchase, given the fact that it seems to be highly thought of among you guys. Does anyone know where I can get the trainer for that model at a reasonable price, apart from 1SKS? And just before we close the issue completely, does anyone have opinions regarding knives with serrated spines used in pakal?
I've never handled a Hobbit, but from the looks of it, it seems much more useful for slashing and hooking than stabbing when held in reverse grip...

Vagabond,

My humblest apology for having misinterpreted your response. I appreciate you taking the time to clarify. ;)

Something I failed to mention in regards to my FP is the fact that I "modified" it because I, as well, think the choil is awkward. I filled the choil "in" with closed cell foam secured via a piece of shrink tube. Not the most aesthetically pleasing mod but effective and easily removed and replaced. The difference is remarkable. Just something I thought others might find useful. Here's a pic.

The Floro is quite similar to the Tracker and if I am correct based somewhat on the design. Definitely engineered for blade combat than utility or survival.

As for an aluminum trainer, check out www.stab.ca for thier custom work. It will be a 1 piece but probably significantly cheaper than the actual drone.

Bob Taylor and Randy Wanner (and possibly with some input from Michael Echanis) designed the Warrior with reverse grip techniques in mind. The point is well aligned for thrusts when held in both sabre and reverse grip though its appearance might indicate otherwise. The serrations are quite pointy, capable of inflicting damage and facilitating effective hooks, traps and passes. I've had the clip sharpened on two of mine which is, IMO, a nice mod. Unfortunately, HWs are only available on the open market but do come up often and at a reasonable price.

Good Luck :)

Ok, but what about the other sawbacks I mentioned? Anyone have any good experience with them?

And I'd prefer to get the folding production trainer for the 710 than a fixed aluminum one, actually...sure nobody knows where to get them for a hundred dollars max?

Well, my 710 with accompanying trainer arrived today. I'm in looove

AWESOME knife, feels great in the hand and was razor sharp out of the box. The trainer mimics the live blade excellently and is a joy to handle.

Now for the bad news... :D I've also discovered that I've become unable to take my eyes off the Shivworks Disciple recently. I know I'm picky about stuff like this :o but it also seems to have less-than-desirable piercing/stabbing capabilities. Please convince me this is not the case...?

just curious, are you looking for a reverse grip knife because you think it looks badass in movies and stuff, or do you actually know what you're doing?

If you want to know whether I've been trained to use a knife, the answer is yes. By this I do not mean that I'm an expert of some sort.

Ok, just making sure you weren't a 17 year old that's seen a few movies and think reverse gripping a knife is the most badass and coolest thing ever.

No, the most badass and coolest thing ever is the Taoist monk in "A Chinese Ghost Story". ;)

Anyway, if that's what you wanted to know, I'll be 21 in october.

I have a Disciple and it would be hard to beat.

Spyderco is working with Southnarc & Trace on a Pikal folder, but it's still at least 6 months off.

I'd like to put in a plug for the Temperance FB ;) . There's not much out there that will cut along side of it. The double distal taper, wide flat grind, very sharp VG-10. It is large for urban carry though.

There are many knives that will work in Pikal, and there are MANY more that will come to be, with an eye towards Pikal. The knives we at Shivworks are producing, and have been developing may be expensive by some standards, but if you figure in the fact they are hand finished, made from S30V, G-10, and heat treated by non other than Paul Bos, they really are one of the best buys you will find in a fixed blade IMHO.
Being well under $200 with those materials, and the method behind it, these tools are a bargain in todays market.
That being said, I am glad to see more and more people appreciating what we are all doing...

Hello to eveyrone, here's my first post on the Discussion forum. I've seen the photos of the new Yojimbo, and it's said to be very good for the pakal grip. Do you all agree with that conclusion, because I am seriously looking to bnuying that folder in the future?

Strangely, it's not on the Spyderco official website yet...
