Best blade size for a survival situation

Well, Stryver, I have to say that I expect you are much more experienced at outdoor survival than I am. I have my grandfather's old flyers knife from when he flew in WW2. It isn't a particularly large knife as a pilot needed to be able to fit into his cockpit, but I would feel quite happy if that were the only knife I had on my person. For some reason, though, my gut continues to have me lean toward the larger knife for the scenario. I expect it has something to do with the security blanket mentality or something like that. I do agree with you, though, that with a smaller fixed blade, you can fashion almost any tool or shelter you might need.

I also prefer the smaller blade (when posed with the above question... only one). Although I like to carry a big knife... many (not all) of the tasks I use it for can be done without it by simply using a little inginuity and improvising (I can't always say the same about the tasks I perform with my smaller knife).

Greg,

Any particular brands you prefer?

Hi MF1,

I carry two folders. They are:

1. Mel Pardue 720 Axis (although costly at $155). A gift from the owner of Benchmade Knives.
2. US Knife (very cheap at around $10) and a staple in my inventory from my military days.

Best,
