Best Blades-What’s Next?

Don,
Thank you. I do respect your work and views. Do custom makers compare performance qualities to production knives, for some reference what is considered low, acceptable, or expected? Seems to me, in general a custom knife, in most cases should attempt to raise the bar. I don't want to keep harping on this but i have no real grasp of the mindset I'm reading here. I don't know how else to ask these questions, so far i get responses that are not answers to what i really want to know, are customs generally BETTER equipt as knives. Why, or how?

Or, is the whole issue a subjective matter of taste?

Could a good production knife easily handle the ABS cutting competition events, pass performance tests for JS and MS stamps? someone please tell me.
David

David, as it's know what test ABS mastersmith's knives regularly have to pass have you or why don't you test one of these production knives you so often speak of?

Seems like it would be easy enough to do.

Kevin,
You are right. i should own a production knife. I am really surprised by the lack of information available, non biased tests, a "consumer reports" type analysis. Hard to imagine I'm alone, just for curiosity sake if nothing else.

Regardless, i have tremendous respect for those who are knifemakers in a traditional sense. I will always value and admire the craft and craftmanship, please take my questions as just that. I only want to know the standard, if there is one.
I also regret steering te thread off into this, please excuse me.

Cliff Stamp sort of set himself up as a testing expert. While he took a lot of criticism and got banned, in theory, someone or organization should offer reports on knives, steels, some reference for consumers. just an opinion.
Take care all,
David

Hi David, I thought you collected some production knives, my mistake. Yes, you make a good point as there's the assumption that custom knives do and should out perform production knives.

However, I would think that if there was a production knife that would in fact out perform a custom make by a top maker, then the factory would put it through the test and use the results in advertising. I have never seen or heard of that taking place.

As this thread addresses the "Best Blades" not just best looking your questions and comments are appropriate here.
I would be interested myself in comments from makers in defense of their blades.
