The what are you reading thread got me thinking. I would like to collect the "Best of" books in the following categories:

Outdoor:
1) Tracking
2) Plant Guide
3) Survival Skills

Urban
1) Survival skills
2) International Travel
3) etc.....

What do you guys recommend for each category?

I like:
"Tracking and the Art of Seeing" by Paul Rezendes - Good all around tracking book. The animals covered are pretty much specific to the United States.

"The Tree Identification Book" and "The Shrub Identification Book" by George Symonds - These two have only black/white pictures, but they are set up very well for identifying what a particular plant or tree is from its bark, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruit etc). Once you know what a plant is, you can go to other books for info on its uses, life-cycle, etc.

I think plant guides should really be area specific to where you are and to a lesser degree so should the tracking guides, what's the point in learning how to track elephants if you live in the UK for example !!!!!

A good general book to boost anyones interest in tracking is " Tom Brown's field guide to nature observation and tracking.
My favourite tracking book which relates to North American wildlife is " Animal Tracks and signs " by Bang Dahlstrom.

Good books on edible plants ( for my area ) are Wild Harvest by Terry Domico and Plants of the Gulf and San Juan Islands and Southern Vancouver Island by Raincoast pocket guides.

My top survival books are 98.6 degrees the art of keeping your ass alive by Cody Lundin ( every survival junkie should own this ) and the good old SAS Survival Handbook by John Wiseman. I have quite a few others that are all good but these would be my top two !

Hope that helps a little !
