By Jim Hrisoulas
The Complete Bladesmith
The Master Bladesmith
The Pattern Welded Blade
which explain how to forge and grind knives using coal and gas forges.
The Backyard Blacksmith by Lorelei Sims
Which contains an extensive and very clear explanation on how to set up a forge and learn the basics of forging with a lot of useful pictures.
The Blacksmith Craft by Charles McRaven, with other tips about how to set up a forge with very basic tools, and some interesting tips on heat treating.
I also advice to read all the posts on metallurgy by Kevin Cashen.
The best thing anyway is to find a skilled bladesmith and have him/her teach you. A single afternoon spent learning is worth more than a thousand books.
If you update your profile to let people know were you live you may get an invite. More books, The wonder of Knifemaking and The $50 Knife Shop by Wayne Goddard. The Hand Forged Knife by Karl Schroen, how to make Knives by Loveless and others, plus there are many videos out there, the forums are a great place to hang out at and learn also.
Custom Knifemaking: 10 Projects from a Master Craftsman by Tim McCreight
Is a good one
Not a whole lot on forging though
Goddard's book has a lot of info on forging
Boyes book is a great book as well
All good book choices. I am a big fan of Jim Hrisoulas' books, and David Boye.
FWIIW, Jim's book, "Pattern Welded Steel" is just a re-mix of the first two books.
If you have $100 to spare get both of Hrisoulas' "Bladesmith" books. By the time you have absorbed and mastered the material in them you will be well on your way. They are an invaluable reference, too.
