Finally decided how I wanted to proceed with this big bowie and here is a pic of the multi-purpose D-guard :)

forged the guard out of a chunk of spring today. This will be one TANK of a knife.

Hopefully I remember to HT the blade before I pound the tang over.:jerkit:

Looking good, what's the rest of the blade look like?:D

BTW, that's a good idea for gaurd, always need a handy bottle opener!

WOW. I love it, any good knife should have a bottle opener.

I always wanted to quench in beer too, just to see what would happen.

I need to get my friend to send me pictures of his Civil War d guard bowie. They were made about 8 miles from where I live. A lot of the d guard bowies were just left at home or traded away since they were really heavy for a infantryman to tote.

That would be nice to see, Will.

Here's some more pics.

Technically still WIP as I still have to do something with the stacked leather handle but other than that it is done. I think I may dye the leather a bit darker and spray a clear coat on it.

Man that sucker is huge! Looks good with the hammer marks/rough forged finish.

I'd experiment with some scrap leather for the look your after for the handle. Most stacked leather handles turned pretty dark after a while.
