What is the best Bowie knife for under or around $500? Custom or production.

Check out the Down Under Bowie. Pictures don't do this justice. But the sheath is below par. Also, for a lot less, there is the Ontario Marine Raider. This is another beast but with a terrible sheath.

The Fällkniven NL 1 and NL2!

I have both and like them very much.
My favorite is the smaller NL2, but the NL1 is a mighty fine 10" production Bowie.
Mine has a custom handle though.

No such thing.
The best fighter won't be the best chopper. The best edge retention won't be the toughest.
You must pick one based on the criteria you are looking to fill.

Are you looking for a Bowie?

I had one made by one of the customer makers here on BF - JK Handmade Knives. It is a great custom bowie.

You have to decide what you want to do with your knife, and "all around" is not a task you do with a knife.

Do you chop with your knives? Carve? Cook? Fondle? All of the above?

Just want a cool knife and probably won't ever have to use it?

You have as many options as there are kinds of bowies.

I really like looks of the Von Tempsky Bowie by Svord. That thing is a beast and under $200.

I would like something that has good edge retention and is good for chopping, if that narrows it down, I saw the wester 49 and it looks nice and simple but I can't find many specs on it so I don't really know?
