Best Buck Fishing Knife

I was not really noticing knives on the previous 8 trips to AK, but one thing stuck out worthy of mentioning. Can't remember any pro guide using a fillet knife to clean our fish. They use mostly a 4-6" fixed or folder. Plenty of Bucks in their sheaths.

The halibut guides or deck hands use cheap throw-away 6" fillet knives that they buy in quantity. Never seen an expensive knife on a halibut charter boat.

Wow! Great photos! Do you know how to post the individual pictures here so that they show up in the post?

Yep, thats what I'd say the deck hands use is cheap throw away knives, then the manager will use the better quality knife . DM

Had an 800 lb brownie swim out to our john boat to retrieve a floating salmon. Could almost touch him. Unbelievably powerful animals

:eek::eek:

I came nearly face to face with a 450lb black bear once-thats nothing compared to a big brownie

It's amazing how quick they can move. Saw two fighting over a fish and the big one chased the smaller one up a steep incline. Happened so fast did not have time to snap a pic. They could be on you before knowing what hit you, and a knife or pistol would just make them mad. Just about every year a fisherman in AK gets killed by being foolish.

Back on topic, I tried to order a new Wusthof Fillet Knife on sale at Cabelas but it's back ordered. Might look around up there for another cheap Buck. Decided to take the new Alpha Hunter and Dorado I bought at the Smoky Mtn Knife Works. That place is Knife Lovers Heaven. Buck has the best display counter there IMHO. Must be over 100 employees working there.

We have a S30v fillet in the cabela's line up. Might be a good alternative to the Wustof. that puppy is sharp (just ask my thumb)

Sounds like you work at Cabelas. What a cool place to work that must be. Checked that one and it's also not available. A little more than I want to spend on a fillet knife anyways.

Pssst ... Actually, he works at Buck. :D

Not available at Cabela's........back order here, back order there......

Maybe Buck should think about hiring a few more people......we also can't help but notice the resounding broken record on the Buck website is "Currently Not Available" over and over and over........

Dave, thanks for posting that photo of a real nice catch of Halibut . Which one is big red ? Things look like they are getting real fishy . DM

Back from the July 2010 Fishing Trip to Alaska. Checked the knives the guides were using for filleting, and they all used 6-8 inch fillet knives, mostly Kershaw. We used the old Buck fillet knife and it performed great. Did use the new Alpha Hunter for gilling, but was just not long enough for use as a fillet knife.

This year the famous 2nd Run Kenai King Salmon were not there in any catchable numbers. Fortunately the 2nd run sockeye run was huge. Even without catching any large King Salmon, we still managed to bring home over 400 lbs of salmon and halibut fillets, so I guess it would be considered a success.

The guides blame the bust in Kenai Kings on excessive commercial fishing for sockeyes, but there was no Kings even after several days of no comm fishing. Something is destroying the Pacific King Salmon, from Calif to AK, over the past 2 years. The Kenai Guides are very worried about the impact this will have on future business if the trend continues.

Here are some pictures of the trip to share.
