Hello world, I have a quick question about buffing compounds. I love to be able to get a nice mirror polish on the things I make, but the question of compounds always seems to be more difficult to answer as most compounds cut so slowly. I've seen a lot of makers use different compounds between high grit (~600 grit) grinding and the final polish, namely black emery. I've personally bought black emery and white polishing compound from my local hardware store (master mechanic brand) and neither made much of a difference until I had held the piece against the buffer for at least 2-4 hours, let alone completely preparing the piece for the next step in polishing. After a bit of research I found a white compound rated "around" 1000 grit and a green (presumably chromox) color compound both from usa knifemaker. The white compound cut a bit faster than the compounds I got at that hardware store, but even so, the green compound works so fast it seems to work faster just skipping the white compound and using straight from the 600 grit greaseless I usually use. Does anybody have any advice on intermediate compounds that can cut with noticeable speed? I've tried different lengths of time and pressure when applying the compound, each on a clean wheel of course, but so far no luck in making any of the "mid range" compounds cut as well as the plain green compound.
