Best Busse for a Marine?

BAD, Badger, or something smaller than 4.5"

When most people are carrying multi-tools, what's the point of a HUGE knife anymore? Weight is bad.

Hmmm. Tough call all around.

Any clue as to what's allowed/not in terms of colors, satin finish vs. matte, etc., ?

I've got a Tan/Snake BATAC that I considered, but hte coloring on the handle might be an issue.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Dennis

The older Satin Jack would be awesome, but the SJT, or BA would be gud, the skinny ASH or the HR would also be good, but are on the larger side. The normal ASH would be way to heavy.

I would say either a Satin Jack Tac or even the BATAC would be a good one to give.
A Game Warden or Active Duty wouldn't be bad either.
I wish your friend well and thank him for his willingness to serve.

Dan

I like the idea of both ... mostly because I'm a Knife Knut.

A mid-sized blade (ASH, SJ or SJTAC, BATAC or HellRazor) plus an EDC (AD or GW). With, of course, a single sheath that can handle both.

I've outfitted a few soldiers this way. No complaints yet. ;)

Can't go wrong with a Comp Satin Jack. perfect weight and balance, and grips are slim not bulky. Can you find a sharper blade?

A good number of my friends serve and almost 100% of them say that a smaller knife (5" or under) is best. My vote would be for a AD and a good multi tool. The knife nut in me wants to vote Hell Razor (my current favorite and the knife I would carry), but due to its size and weight it would not be as practical. Items that don't lend themselves to easy carry often get left behind.

In the battle for An Najaf, a Marine was going through a door that led down a stairway. He was met at the door by a Terr. with an RPG, the Terr was about to fire the RPG and the Marine did not have time to use his weapon, so he dove and tackled the guy and eventually subdued him by ramming his issue Ontario OKC-3S into his temple.. with that story in mind; yes, 99% of the time your blade is going to be used for utility duty, but in that rare occasion if it is used to save your life in hand to hand combat, it is nice to have a blade which will do the job. No soldier in combat should ever be without a good fighting blade with at least a 5"-7.5" blade for business. multitools are great to work and fix things, but like others have said, a larger knife will do most the jobs a small knife, will but the opposite is not true. There are some items, that can't be left behind due to weight; IMO, a good combat knife is one thing that can't be skeetched on.. (use the meaner street at base to open packages from home and MRE boxes) But opinions will differ on this as we've seen. 5.56, 7.62 or 7.62x39, lets get into that one! :-)

i'm not pushin my knives here but this what is going to Iraq with my Marine Friend....... 5 inch Blade, .323 A-2. short blade not too heavy but will do what u need!! Thats why i think a CG Public Defender, would be a great Soldier knife... from experience.

In line with RoyalM's comment, we've given Swamp Rat HRLM is tan/muddy to six guys who have taken them to Iraq or Afghanistan (along with Okuden's incredible sheaths). One current Recon Marine who has been over three times stated that he liked that size best and carries it below his Deuce Gear horizontal left side. He thinks any need much bigger calls for the bayonet. By the way, 3/1 fought Fallujah with fixed bayonets for the first time in a long time and used them.

Great thread. From my experience and assuming the young marine will be in harm's way, I would put a CG BATAC on the MOLLE and a NARK on the boot. Primary and backup with purpose and flexability. In the field, the unit CO will be open to many options for this young marine to carry out his duty.

Semper Fi Marine! Let him know we're all proud of him.

while its not INFI i scored a CGDM for my brother headed to afghanistan.

i thing the CGDM is the perfect knife for a soldier with .285in thick indestructible S7 steel and i think it is the perfect size and weight.

i'm not sure i would want to lug an ASH-1 up and down the afghan mountains.

if its gotta be INFI i would go with some sort of BATAC.

of course if i where i soldier i would have a NMFBM hanging on my MOLLE vest......lol.

Comp Jackhammer, Comp Satin Jack or Skinny Ash....none with a shiny finish.....are all excellent as is the Hell Razor ....but a DMDC is a great knife as well. These all work....after that it is just personal preference.

If he cuts a lot of foilage, as say in a Sniper role, I would also send him a folding pruning saw and the Leatherman secaturs. The saw's are cheap....secaturs a bit more. The secaturs fit in well as a piggy back sheath and the saw in a seperate pouch.

Only other tool I would use is a BRKT Golok......these are excellent light weight choppers.....

I am awaiting some of the above to make a choice.

This is my first satin jack tac so maybe I'm just a little smitten with it, but I really like the length, weight, and balance of the comp sjtac. I'd also consider an ASHLE or CGASH, but I prefer heavier knives than some folks.

Just an FYI - Eric bailed me out on a Muddy M6 Swampy about a year ago for anudder guy goin into the Marines. He JUST got it b/c it was the first time I saw him since he grajamarated, went BACK for more training and did a quick tour in "parts unknown." He came back to get married. Whew!

I love this place. Thanks for the help and keep it coming.

Meaner street, hands down. Small, but still bigger than a game warden. Stabby blade and tougher than a $2.00 steak, great knife all around. And its cheaper than a skinny ash.
