Best Busse for future firefighter?

I guess I should clarify a little more, I'm going to be training for search and rescue soon, so I will need a knife for that. I guess I was a little misleading saying that I will have it in my bunker gear. I'm just looking for something in the 4-6" range.

I have a friend that is selling a Boss ST. ... good tough blade ... also a SAR 5.

Can't have to many fixed blades!

there are a few sar guys that post here.

one carries a fusion steel heart, which is quite a bit of knife.

in the 4"-6" range:

skinny ash
meaner or leaner street
sar 4
sar 5
badger series

Your first choice should be the Anorexic Boss Street LE, you can order one right from Busse here:
http://www.bussecombat.com/knives/index.shtml
and I'm sure they will start making them real soon.
And if not, I guess you can go with the regular Boss Street, or I think the larger Boss Jack is a great knife.

The SAR range is probably worth looking at ...... but I would just go for whichever knife you like the look of best .... they are all good for the uses you indicate .....

I like "lightness" so prefer the Basic series .... if I was doing SAR it would be a Basic 9 or a SAR 8 .... but I like a larger knife than the 4-6 range .... chopping ability is always useful ....

For quick availability, the scrofa.

If you want to wait and look for it, a SAR 4 might be nice.

in light of the sar work, i would go with the game warden with teeth, a couple on the exchange at the moment, i know jaxx has one for sale and the spyderco rescue is a must as well and they do have one in the salt version that fits the bill and you could stay really close to the 400. mark, the rescues are on the exchange frequently...

Iwannamakeknives,
What kind of SAR work will you be doing? It would help to have a better idea of what kind of environment you are going to be operating in.

There are several of us around here that have been involved with Wilderness SAR for many years. The hands down favorite is a Fusion Steal Heart particularly the Heavy Heart variant. Unfortunately they haven't been made in years and run $500 plus on the exchange.

Other knives that my colleagues carry are Ratwielers, SNFO, NSFNO, battle mistress of any and all variants. A few of us are using SJTACs also. A small minority of also have tried the Sasquatch. For the most part none of use have been impressed with the Sar series.

Outside of Busse Bill Siegle makes a four inch knife that was developed from input of River-8 and many of us SAR types helped do field testing on the prototypes. It has quickly become a favorite smaller knife around here. Another smaller knife to consider is a SST (also 4 inches) by Okuden. I bought one last April and have been doing a long term field test on it. I am really impressed with it.

Another thing to consider is what your department policies are. My friend was a pat timer and he carried a Game Warden as part of his turnouts. It was the largest fix blade knife his dept would allow to be carried. EMT shears, seat belt cutters such as Benchmade Houdini or Model 7 rescue, and a good high quality folder such as a XM-18, Strider, Benchmade, Spyderco etc... would serve you better in the long run and would be usable for turnout and SAR use.

Hope this was helpful.

Hey guys,
I'm about to graduate the fire academy and my parents are going to get me knife for graduation. I want to get a Busse!
The budget is 400, which knife should I go with?

For those that missed it, he did mention he wanted to get a Busse!

get a busse that you like, and use it in your everyday life/camping/etc. Please don't take that blade on a fireground, You'll prob lose in the the first primary search w/ a downed patient. For SAR also carry something you can beat the crap out of, drop out of the chopper, let fall into that cave, use for a cross anchor or anything else. I carry a 93mm Rescue (one of my grad presents) or a S30V military and/or a SOG easy out multitool. I repaired a knife for a guy here at work today and I was all WTF happened to it. turns out he used it to pry open two car hoods and hacked thru a battery cable with it in a recent multiple pile up. Bottom line is you want something you can store in your gear and get out but not be broken up when you lose it in a fire, or a chopper medic needs it and borrows it or all the other million things that will happen in the LOD. You'd be better off getting a nice axe unless your area is just SAR prone. Not saying don't get a Busse, just put it to better use than chopping open car hoods and rappelling from...

A Busse SAR 3 or Game Warden would come in handy. If "off" Busse, a Randall "Fireman" says it all. You can get one around the $400 range. One of my favorite knives. Good Luck!

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!
Quite an accomplishment

I dont know any of my firefighter friends who carry fixed blades while
on duty.
Some have "good" folders for peace of mind.
I would imagine a good folder for self rescue.
Dont know what you would need it for otherwise (while on duty)

A knife for graduation does seem like a fine gift,
and a Busse would be a great way to remember
your accomplishment.
If you "really" want to get a knife to carry on duty,
I would suggest you wait till you get your assignment
and talk with your brothers and see what they are
carrying and recommend.

Hey,
wait a minute!
I thought of the perfect knife a firefighter would get great use from!

A thin Nick for all that cooking you guys do :D

As a long-ago rural firefighter, I'd recommend a Sus Scrofa, one with serrations IMO. Don't know about current restrictions on fixed blades, especially in urban/suburban areas.

Also check out the smaller, more people-friendly serrated SMOG Warden or Fire Warden for something "pocketable"
