Best Busse Knife of 2008?

So far, it's the one I nearly didn't buy, and didn't think I would really want. I should really know by now that a Busse doesn't exist that I don't like!

My Best Busse of 2008?

ASH1LE. No doubt whatsoever. It's fast becoming my one go-to knife for most tasks; everything except heavy chopping (then the FBM or HHFSH comes out) and the finest of tasks (thinned flat AD or Cultie)

I just can't put this knife down! It's the perfect size, weight, thickness, height and grip in my opinion for a general purpose belt knife.

I know the NMFBM is impressive with its sheer size and unequaled chopping power but to me that's just a bigger FBM; and too big for me really.

All that said, I haven't held an SFNO yet...

Vetganza FBM with full height flat grind with moss coating and green linen mags. Definitely a sleeper but my favorite. Has some weight but less than others and the mags fit my hand perfect. Plus the blade profile is damn sexy. Don't know if it could be improved. This thing saved me from putting the cash on a SHBM. It feels that good to me. The NMFBM was impressive but this is much more practical for a person my size to carry and use. I have yet to handle a NMSFNO or any SFNO so I can't comment on them. My FSH would be in the running too but isn't from 2008 and has been banned.

Thanks:thumbup:
I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for that one.

They are around. One just sold yesterday on the forum shop at what seemed to be a fairly reasonable price.

This is not my pick but a quick pick of the blade before I bought it.

This is the pick from the Ganza.

It feels really good to me and has a good balance.

That's a good looking knife! Have you had a chance to give it any lovin' yet? I have an NM FBM with a Moss finish blade, looks like it should hold up pretty well.

Want to use it today if I get a chance to chop some wood. So far I've only done some cooking with it :) I had a NMFBM and that thing was a monster. I can't imagine anything really out chopping that beast. I was sad to see it go but at 5'8" I don't see myself carrying it around much. I talked to Amy about the moss coating. She stated that it is pretty much exactly like the other coatings they use but a different color. I was surprised as my FBM seems a little dimply. I am curious to see how it holds up compared to the standard black and sage coatings though.

That is surprising, there's a lot of variation in texture and feel among the different finishes. I haven't seen anything else "dimpled" like the moss and, I think, the Bama clay. Both from Knob creek.

For personal practical purposes, I never bought a NMFBM-LE. I just don't have a use for one and if I don't have a use then I simply don't buy it.

I can relate. My budget doesn't really allow me to buy ANY Busses, but I've managed to justify the purchase of several because "I'll use them."

That's why I'll pick the Boney Active Duty as my favorite of 2008, followed by the SAR5. The BAD has had (and undoubtedly will get) the most use of any of my Busse knives. It's a very handy knife.

Stay sharp,

Tough call. BAD's are bad. TRES bad.

Skinny ASH - I didn't appreciate this knife until Skunker helped me out with a friend in the Marines. Whoa. I'm still tempted to get one, but I need another mid-size like a hole in da head. In hindsight, I wish the HOG blades were skinnies. I'm reluctant to use the sharpened brick with my name on it. LOL

SARSquatch - I've actually USED this one a bit. I got a Blade-show-made one - with the better edge. Two actually. Well, three if you count the coated one. The CE's are rustbuckets but GREAT blades. And I think the handle is decent.

SAR5. Hmmm. . . I haven't used mine yet. I didn't like the hand-feel at first. But you know what? It's a modern era Randall #25. Side-by-side, they have the same blade length, similar profile, and almost EXACT same handle feel. Odd.

I don't have the jing (unless Santa brings me about 1,000 points on the Dow in the next 2 weeks) to get the NMSFNO, but I'd love one. That might be the winner, but not something I got to fondle.

I will say my FSH still is my kindlin-maker of choice. So extensively using these other is just hard to do. Esp. in a year I got 2 more SH blades. (BBSHSH and SHBM)

2008 will be remembered as the year of the Natural Outlaw. The SFNO in both varieties are the bomb. I love my NM and I can't wait for my LE.

You may be right about that. But that NMFBM sure turned a lot of heads...

I think the SFNOLE and NMFBM will probably go down as the rarest and highest after-market priced blades for the year.

On the other hand, nothing Busse makes ever loses value. Even knives that are available for long periods of time, or aren't incredibly popular when they are released end up becoming rare and expensive collector's items. Take the Pork Belly Skinner and the War Boar, as examples... you hardly ever see those on the exchange.

I'm just glad they let a few Silent Knights (maybe 6-10) out of the custom shop...
