+1
I'm more tempted to go with one of the Battle Mistresses for a single survival knife. Maybe the Bushwacker.
The BOSS Jack and CABS are awesome if I'm going out and know what to expect within reason, but if I were to be suddenly surprised with an emergency, I'd want more length and width to the blade.

The one you have with you will be your survival knife. Period. For me, that means a skeleton warden or a rat tail because that is what rides
my belt to work, a cultellus most of the rest of the time.

SFNO::thumbup:
-big enough but not to big,
-lite enough but not to lite,
-thick enough to baton...

Check out the Camp Tramp too. A very versatile blade IMO, and less expensive if budget is a concern

I think the terrain dictates the knife required to survive in it ... I decided to go for a Basic 9 ...
I agree with your comments and the others about climate and terrain determining what kind of knife is needed. The Basic 9 would be one of my top choices as well. Maybe a Basic 7 or Basic 11, or maybe a SHSHII or SHBM - they are all great knives!

Zero Tolerance Natural Outlaw Ergo. 6" blade just right. Light enough to wear so that it will be available when really needed. Not unnecessarily thick.

Sarsquatch a close second, and more available than the ZTNO-E.

LionSteel SR1 in pocket.. Built like Busse would build a folder.

This is my choice also

I appreciate the pic and the reply. However, that tip annoys me a great deal. Might as well be a scalpel. Certainly not going to spear or stab with it.

I'd take a SFNO, Skinny ASH or SH Ergo. Unless it was a jungle/rain forest, then I'd want a Basic 11 or BWM.

are you using it for survival or for fighting..lol...It has worked in real life, not internet forum bantering.

I've used blades for survival before, not for fighting.

Doesn't change the fact that you can't stab very well with the one you posted. Takes away some of the hunting capabilities at the very least.

If the edge is sharp, it will stab just fine. It will stab very well anyway, whilst I don't have that particular model BM, I do have a FBM, and its blade is very similar in shape and grind. I would most definitely not like to be the target critter of a stab from someone weildng a Battle Mistress!! :) I don't care what anyone says, it's going in. Deep.

ZTNOe, one of the tops on my list, a ZTBAe would have been heaven.

Too much talk lately about the E seres, its got me longing for that ZTNOe more than ever. :p

I like little and big ... or... medium. Therefore you have either two knives with you that are specialists or one knife that is a generalist.

My favorite generalist, right now, is the HellRazor, although I can substitute a Satin Jack, JackHammer, or Camp Tramp in the same role.

My favorite specialists right now are the B11 paired with a SS4. I would be just as happy with my Dog Skinner + Rat Daddy LE and my MS + CGFBM combos.

Options are good. :D :D :D

Why do you consider some knife designs are not able to stab well ? ... and how are "hunting" capabilities diminished ? Do you mean "hunting" with the knife ?

If you mean "hunting with the knife" what do you favour ... old school Rambo ... or new school Bear Grylls ... ???

"I've used blades for survival before " ... of course you have ....

A very valid choice and a sweet blade!!

Based on what hands on experience with INFI, one must ask? Certainly that SHBM seems to have stood the tests of both time and use... as have all of my INFI users way younger than that one.

Internet survival? :p

That SHBM stabs way better than you give it credit for, I guarantee it. Here is a very similarly shaped FBM LE that stabbed through two layers of sheetmetal just fine... where is your proof against this evidence? It's the one sunk to the hilt.

Here it is with the other two of the biggest ones after participating in that hood pic. I have chopped and split wood with the FBM LE all winter this year and have determined I could easily get by with it as my only knife if I had to, but I would be much happier with a nice 3-4" blade to accompany it.

Some opinions read on the internet are just hilarious. Two   to Cobalt and Peter for calling it when you see it. Seems odd for the OP to ask for advice on the best Busse survival blade and then pretend to know better than the people who have personally used them then kindly offer there time and opinions to help answer your question. :thumbdn:

I used to live in the big city and I used blades for survival too... :foot: fan blades to stay cool when the house gets too warm, also to keep my engine running cool on the way to the grocery store, and to keep the fridge/freezer running when I got back. Then there are butter knives to make a PB&J and steak knives to cut up meat I didn't even have to kill, let alone quarter, skin, gut & butcher. City life was rough.

Then I moved out into the woods permanently where the power is unreliable at best, cell phones don't work, dead trees keep me warm all winter (with or without power) and both fresh drinking water and sewage treatment are provided by my land instead of the city. I'm even spoiled enough to have propane provide me with hot water without electricity too. I'm "surviving" just fine and cheaper to boot, but I am certainly not roughing it. Using INFI and SR101 first hand to figure out what works best for my needs is a ton of fun and very enlightening.

Now, getting back to trying to help others reading this thread that may be asking the same question. Peter and I have similar tastes in our blades, but we live/go to different parts of the world and I know I am not going into any jungles heavier than the area I live so I can get by with something as small as a SAR 6. For a lightweight yet long carry knife, since I don't want to pay the markup for a B9 I am waiting patiently for the B8 and if all else fails I have a Battle Rat to work with, but B11's work great in evergreen forests too. There are few Busse blades over 5" that would leave one feeling under knifed in a survival scenario as they will all work better, harder and longer than almost any other knife out there before breaking. ;)

It's tough to pick just one, but the financially smart way to do it is buy a user, try it and either keep it if you like it or sell it to buy another if you don't. Then you know what works best for you.

In my pocket I carry a CS Rajah II. This thing will easily take off an arm.

Ohhh, you mean zombie survival. KZ II in one hand, FBM in the other... Its all I teach in my Zombie Apocalypse Defense and Survival (ZADS) course at the new Busse San Jose shop. You can sign up for the next class but the first one is full, Lynn Thompson bought out all the seats. I didn't want to sell them to him but he promised to bring a ship-load of meat to cut up. A the end of the day, who could resist hackin up all that meat? I'll tell you one thing though, I'm not going anywhere NEAR anyone hitting anything with any of his *blades* (see Tosh.0 sword break).

I agree with Peter, how and what are you going to hunt? Harvesting edible leaves and bugs will get you through a real "survival" situation if you just mean lost in the woods for a few days. A spear made from wood with your knife would probably work for most hunting (small water animals are the only things I actually think I have a remote chance of nabbing) unless you're hardcore and gonna track a 400lb. hog on foot. I, coincidentally, am teaching a class on that too its called the Advanced Fundamentals of Rounding up Oinkers (AFRO). You'll need to provide proof of dental insurance because a lot of the training requires running knife-in-teeth.

There's also the realm of trapping which is another topic I know little to nothing about. If you trapped game large enough I guess you could lash your knife to a stick and make a Danspear in which case the mistress would go in, but damn man, now we're getting silly.

All my Busse's are survival knives, I couldn't survive without them ba-dum-bum
