best buy customs?

Just to throw something a little different into the pot, if you're talking about collectors' pieces and art knives, the best buys I've found are in antique knives. I have a few Middle Eastern knives 100-250 years old in the <$1000 range that are truly magnificent. You could never get work done today for that kind of money.

I have two of his on order and I make my own knives!

I have to agree with the mention(s) of Mr. Ralph. My small Apogee is quite the knife for the same price as a higher end production piece like say, a upper end William Henry. Definitely a high "bang to buck" ratio.

No one mentioned Bruce Evans!? He forges stuff that is priced less than most stock removal fixed blades. I had handled a couple of his large bowies and they were VERY impressive for the $. I picked up a nice recurved boot knife and have another on order from him that is due soon.

Kit Carson makes one of the toughest working folders out there and no one can touch his work for even 50% more $ IMHO. Bad part is the 2 yr + wait. Clean simple, functional folders made to be used/abuse daily.

Bad part about bring any folks names up here is that you will have to wait longer now to buy their knives since they are priced well. Waiting makes the heart grow fond.

There are LOTS of big bang for the $ makers listed in this topic, and many others that haven't been mentioned. There are some over priced FOOLS as well (thats another topic....LOL).

I think the key to value is the so called "big name makers." I've found incredble customs by "local guys" at every knife show I've attended. Also, the early Sheffield and New York era production knives are really impressive and dare I say "nearly custom" made.

I guess I was really thinking about bang for the buck. Makers that offer a lot for the money. Maybe makers that don't charge as much as some big name makers.

Let's not forget Bob Dozier!
Newt Livesay too!
I've got some of their stuff...
I read good things about Running Dog here, too...
Ebbtide out.

Paul Lebetard of Vancleave, MS. makes the most knife ive seen for the money. Great classic designs, extremely well fit/finish, very functional materials. Some of the best sheaths ive seen as well.

Tinus Beukes from South Africa puts out some beautiful pieces, with exceptional fit/finish, for a very reasonable price.

John Etzler is doing nice stuff.

Bub Worrell gives a great value.

DDR will always take care of you as well as any maker can.

Wayne Clark from Southern California is a GREAT custom maker who makes a sweet knife. I have one of his Model #3's that has been with me for the last four years, and it has never let me down.

No, he doesn't have a website, and no, he doesn't have a catalog. Tactical Knives mag did an article on him a couple of years back, but other than that...

Best custom made utility knives for the buck out there...

I'm a big fan of the lesser known knifemaker, and I'd have to add Tim Morgan to the list. He's not on the web, except the examples on Paracelsus' site. Forges great working knives. I own three, and will probably buy something from him the next time I see him. I'd also mention James Shaver of Spider Ridge Forge in West Virginia. Nice work, REASONABLE prices.
